Summer 2011 Oahu & the East Coast

Hawai’i is not a state of mind, but a state of grace. ~ Paul Theroux

And in this state of grace, we certainly have many blessings. While these blessings are commonly distilled into images of an island paradise of sun, surf, and hula, our Hawaiian archipelago in actuality consists of 132 islands, atolls, and reefs (6,470 square miles) and a geologic system that represents a complexity and diversity rivaled only by the unique culture that inhabits it. This culture was established by the ancient Hawaiians and has been further developed through the cultural contributions of each successive ethnic group to acculturate to Hawai’i, resulting in an amazing place and an amazing people.

Similarly diverse and unique are the educational opportunities afforded the children of Hawai’i. Beyond public school opportunities, the tradition to excellence in education remains at the forefront of efforts made in the independent schools of Hawai’i. Since Hawai’i has more independent schools per capita than any other state, on Monday, July 11, 2011, I was delighted to visit some of the finest the state and the entire U.S. has to offer. Of course, I started with my alma mater, Hawai’i Preparatory Academy, then visited I’olani School, Mid Pacific Institute, Punahou School (yes, THIS school is Barack Obama’s alma mater), and La Pietra. Other campus visits will be forthcoming.

Our motivation in learning more about our brother and sister schools is that we often have students who make the transition from these schools to HPA and vice-versa. Often-times as families move away from Oahu to pursue employment on the U.S. mainland or further overseas, they seek educational opportunities that allow their Hawai’i ties to remain, and choose to send their children as boarding students to HPA. Likewise, when a family transitions from Hawai’i island to O’ahu, they are most often seeking educational opportunities similar to those provided by HPA. It is always in our collective best-interest to support our students as they make these possible transitions from day students to boarding, from another school to HPA, and from HPA to college and beyond.

The wonderful people I met at these schools all have great love for HPA- our faculty and staff, facilities, academic and athletic opportunities, and incredible campuses- we are truly lucky to have such advocates for HPA and colleagues in education!

The Best of the Big Island omiyage (gifts) went with me to Oahu, Big Island Candies (www.bigislandcandies.com/) and the HPA viewbook.

Two if By Sea – Boston Day 3 Recap

This morning also started out exceptionally early, but I had a partner in tow! The new HPA Middle School Director of Residential Life, the lovely soon-to-be Mrs. Ruth Koeningsbauer met me for a run. As with all runs that involve me and another person, the run turned into a walking talk rather than a talking walk in 20 seconds. It was wonderful to learn about Ruth's experiences at her current... Two if By Sea – Boston Day 2 Recap

I rose to the sun cracking across the Charles River at 5:00 a.m. Insisting that I was awake, my body ran itself from BU to Harvard Square through the childhood memories of my ten-year old self. My family lived on the Harvard Business School campus (pictured below) when my parents were graduate students at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.   Everything seemed much bigger and... Although I thought I was prepared for dorm life (rubber shower slippers and pillow from home packed with me) having spent eight years, four as a... Read More >
