Travel News

Milan, Italy

My last city of this very long trip was certainly not the least. Milan was added at the last minute, in fact the day before I left for Ghana I was finalizing my flights to and from Milan. Even though it was a last minute addition, it was a very successful trip. I was there for basically 24 hours. I got into Milan late at night. The next morning we went to a high school and had a fair.... Read More >

Munich, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Germany- November 4-12, 2011

My time in Germany was part of an organized tour. Several schools joined an educational consultant and traveled to five cities. At each city we would have a fair where we would each introduce our school and then families would go to the tables of the schools they were interested in learning more about. The tour was well organized and I was able to meet many families who were interested in HPA... Read More >

Moscow, Russia- November 1- 4, 2011

I arrived in Moscow in the evening. I planned ahead and shipped a jacket to myself, so it was good to pick up the box at the front desk after checking in and getting a jacket. After being in Africa and the Middle East for so long, I wasn’t prepared for the cold. The following day, my first appointment was with the Education USA office. Once again, this office is funded by the U.S. State... Read More >

Istanbul, Turkey- October 30- November 1, 2011

City Report – Istanbul We arrived in Istanbul, Turkey in the late afternoon. I spent the evening working on the computer and the next day we went to a country club outside of Istanbul for a fair. The event gave families an opportunity to learn about studying abroad and they could meet with representatives from several schools. I met many families who were interested in both our school and... Doha, Qatar - October 26-29, 2011

City Report – Doha, Qatar We arrived in Doha by 7AM, and it was already over 90 degrees.  We got to our hotel but couldn’t check in, we only stopped by to pick up boxes of material we had shipped there for our school visits.  We picked up our material and headed off to our first school visit, the Qatar Leadership Academy.  QLA is a boys school that is part military academy and... Kuwait- October 24-26, 2011

I flew from Bahrain to Kuwait City (about the same time it takes to fly from Honolulu to Kona) and arrived at the hotel in enough time to check in and go to bed. The next day I spent most of the time catching up on e-mails and then that evening all the schools who were going to travel together this week met for an orientation dinner. There were about 15 schools traveling through the Middle East... Read More >

Saudi Arabia- October 18 -24, 2011

I arrived in Saudi Arabia around 2AM from the flight from Lagos, Nigeria (with a layover in Doha, Qatar). I was in the Kingdom to visit the Saudi Aramco schools. Saudi Aramco is the largest oil company in the world, and started as a joint U.S. and Saudi company. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia bought out all the U.S. interests in the 80’s I believe, and the Kingdom and the government of Saudi... Read More >

Lagos, Nigeria- October 12-17, 2011

The last days in Lagos were three days of fairs. The first fair was held in our hotel for six hours (2PM – 8PM). We had several families come through and meet with us. Typically most fairs are 2 – 2 ½ hours, but in Africa you have to extend the length of your fair so families can make it here since traffic is so bad. It was a great opportunity to show families how amazing HPA is, especially... Read More >

Lagos, Nigeria- October 12, 2011

We arrived in Lagos and drove straight to our hotel on the island of Ikoyi. It is in the Lagos Lagoon with three bridges that connect it to the mainland of Lagos City. We chose the location because of the traffic problems in Lagos. People drive onto the island in the morning for work and drive off to go home in the evenings. By being the island, we can go against traffic to have appointments... Read More >

Accra, Ghana- October 9, 2011

My plane left Kona, HI at 10:45PM on Oct. 6, 2011.  I flew to Phoenix, AZ and then caught another plane to Washington DC.  I had a 6 hour layover before I flew out of DC at 10:45 direct to Accra.  After a 10 ½ hour flight, I arrived in Accra, Ghana for a total 31 hours travel time.  Accra is warm and a more humid than Hawai’i, but still a beautiful place.  The people are... Caracas, Venezuela- October 1, 2011

I arrived in Caracas mid-day.  I had to wait in the hotel lobby for an hour or so before I could check-in, so I was able to contentedly work on e-mail. I was also told by staff that Caracas isn’t the safest city to wander unknowingly and decided to stay in the hotel and got a lot of work done on the computer.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get outside to see the city.  It was my... Quito, Ecuador - September 28, 2011

On Wednesday, Sept. 28 we flew from Bogota to Quito, Ecuador. After arriving I spent the rest of the day catching up on e-mails and getting some laundry done. I did get to eat dinner at a restaurant right next to the Presidential Palace in the old part of town. Many of the buildings were several centuries old and had a European feel to it. It was absolutely beautiful and I understood why it... Read More >

Bogota, Colombia

Bogota, Colombia is a fascinating city.  The first day we visited two different schools and met with their entire middle school and upper school classes. It was a very busy day, but the students were eager and interested in studying abroad for a summer or year.  I enjoyed speaking to them, and they loved the photos of HPA and all the activities we do.  On the second day in... Mexico City

In the morning I went with a group of schools to a well-known educational consultant in Mexico City.  It was a wonderful visit and she able to learn about some new things at HPA.  For example, I spoke about the “Business Innovator” award that the HPA Energy Lab received from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).  HPA was one of 35 honorees, and the only... Mexico City

Today our large group of schools split in two and my group visited the Education USA Office in Mexico City.  Education USA is funded by the U.S. State Department, and there are 400 offices worldwide promoting education in the United States.  There are 15 Education USA Offices in Mexico, and in 2010 they had 19,222 people visit their offices.  About 16% of those people were looking... Mexico City

If we include the entire metropolitan area of Mexico City, the total population is more than 20 million, which makes it the largest city in the Western Hemisphere. After a night flight from Kona to Los Angeles, and another flight to Mexico City, I arrived in this amazing city full of history and culture. I spent some time adjusting to the new time zone and scheduling appointments. My first... Read More >
