Monthly Memo: March 2008
Seniors:
Because of spring break (March 13–March 30), March is a very short month for college counseling. Seniors continue to hear decisions from their colleges in March and April. They must choose their college by May 1 (the universal reply date). We ask that our seniors notify the college that they choose to attend and also the colleges that choose not to attend as soon as possible. Your letters declining offers of admission demonstrate that you have good manners and appreciate what people have done on your behalf. These e-mails also present a positive impression of a student from HPA that will help our future applicants. When you are declining an offer of admission, please send the following e-mail, or something similar, to the college’s admission office:
Juniors:
Our College Counseling planning class continues to be very productive. Thank you for your excellent attitude and hard work. Remember that we have a blog to keep you up to date on assignments and homework. Please be sure to complete the following assignments:
1) Before spring break, distribute your “College Input Forms” to teachers, advisors, parents, and friends.
2) Before spring break, print out your Family Connection list of at least 10 schools and submit the list to College Counseling.
3) During spring break, write initial drafts of college essay. You should complete drafts on two different topics.
Enjoy your spring break. If you are taking a college trip, you should have a much better idea about schools by the time you return in April. If you are on vacation with your family, make a point to stop at colleges in the area. Remember you can always contact us during the vacation by e-mail or by calling 881-4295.
After spring break, we will work on refining your college essays and college lists. We also will do our student self-evaluation forms. We will be scheduling individual college counseling sessions for students who have completed all of their assignments.
On April 26, the National College Fair will be held at UH-Hilo. This is the first time the college fair will be on the Big Island. Many colleges from around the country will be in attendance. We will provide transportation to the fair on this day. Please sign up in College Counseling.
The next SAT tests are on May 3 and June 7.
The next ACT is April 12.
