HPA Introduces Semester at Sea
HPA students in grades 10 through 12 can experience a global learning adventure through a new semester at sea pre-college program. Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy is a founding high school partner for the program, which is designed to develop a level of global understanding, cultural awareness, and interconnections among students in grades 10 through 12.
Five high schools from across the United States will send 10-12 students and two faculty chaperones on each voyage. During a typical three-week voyage, students participate in college-level lectures while at sea. In each of up to eight ports-of-call, students travel in groups on pre-arranged field study programs mentored by high school educators.
Upcoming pre-college offerings are scheduled for December 15, 2010-January 4, 2011 and April 27, 2011-May 18, 2011. The itinerary for the December/January trip includes: San Diego, Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Puerto Quetzal, Corinto, Puntarenas, Transit Panama Canal, Cristobal, Puerto Limon, Roatan, St. Thomas De Castilla, Belize City, Cozumel, and Fort Lauderdale.
The program will be $4,500 for each student for 21 days of all 12 ports including food (except lunches on days of excursions), airfare, 11 excursions, and a hotel in Fort Lauderdale. Visit this link to see the ship the students will travel on.
The April/May voyage will sail to Central America and back to the United States. For more information, contact trip advisor Kristal Blacksmith (808-881-4258; e-mail: kblacksmith@hpa.edu) or visit www.semesteratsea.org/pre-college.
