Second Annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K Run/Walk at Hawaii Preparatory Academy

October 17 Event Benefits HPA Scholarship Fund, Builds Breast Cancer Awareness

Runners, walkers, and families are invited to participate in the Second Annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K Run/Walk beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 17, at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy cross country course. The course, located at the school’s Upper Campus, is a challenging, but fun course that includes hills, flats, grass, and pavement.

Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, passed away in June 2009 after a valiant battle against breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and organizers hope to increase awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection.

All proceeds from the event will fund the annual Ulrike Katharina “Bieni” Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA, which recognizes a young woman who is gifted in athletics, academics, or the arts; who understands her responsibility to work hard to develop and share those gifts; and who demonstrates a sincere commitment and willingness to go the “extra mile” for friends, family, or a worthy cause.

Registration and pledge forms are available online at www.bienifunrun.org. The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner up fundraiser will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Medals will be awarded to the top two overall male and female finishers and to the top three male and female finishers in each age division.

Entry fee is $25 for adults, $20 for students 14 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after October 10. The event is made possible by Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. For more information, call Liz Noetzel at 808-989-9100 (e-mail: HPArace@gmail.com).
