Hidekazu and Yoshiko Akai might live in Japan but their perspective on education is international.

“In the Japanese education system, things are knowledge based,” said Hidekazu. “There’s not much emphasis on critical thinking—they just cram in facts and information.”

The couple wanted something different for their children. Both parents wanted a place where their children could grow through academics, sports, and the advantages offered by a boarding program. They’d considered a boarding school on the U.S. mainland until a friend in Honolulu suggested HPA. It turned out to be an auspicious introduction, particularly as the couple came to know the school better.

“The dorm parents are very decent and helpful,” said Yoshiko. “The ESL program is also very solid. These were two of the things we both liked about HPA.”

“When I was young, I would encounter foreigners in Japan,” said Hidekazu. “Because I wasn’t used to them they seemed strange. Now as an adult and having traveled to many places—the mainland, Southern Hemisphere, and even Africa— having friends from different parts of the world is a big asset in my life. I decided that I wanted my children to meet people from other cultures; to be accepting of all people with a strong, kind heart. At HPA, there are students from many different cultures and backgrounds.”

Eigoro AkaiThe Akai’s oldest son and daughter, Eigoro and Tsukasa, were the first to attend HPA. Noting their high level of achievement and success at the school, the couple’s younger son, Hideyoshi followed two years later. All three children spent their first year focused on learning English, which comes more quickly at a young age.

“This place is not just for studies,” said Yoshiko. “It also helps students to be independent. It is an ideal place.”

Parents Weekend, which plays host to parents from around the world, gave the couple a chance to visit their children and learn more about their lives at the school. “I had teacher conferences where I felt that not just a few, but many teachers were looking after my children,” said Hidekazu. “And not just in their studies, but also in school life. For that we’re very appreciative.”
