Sky Writing

In most respects, Skyler is a typical kid. He does typical kid things, playing soccer, baseball, basketball, and going to the beach. Kamuela is a great place to live, with plenty of wide-open spaces—both on campus and off—and Skyler has explored most of it.

There is, however, one thing that might set Skyler apart from most other kids, and from adults for that matter. “I want to be a novelist,” he said. A novelist? “Yes, because I like to read and I like to write.” It makes perfect sense, when you think about it.

For HPA students, even young ones like Skyler, having big ambitions aren’t unusual. They’re exposed at an early age to a host of learning resources, from the traditional—a library filled with books, for example—to the technologically sophisticated. And their days are spent with teachers and teaching assistants who are more than eager to help each student take the next step up on the ladder of learning. It’s perhaps to be expected that students have big expectations for themselves.

“The teachers are very nice,” Skyler said. “They always help you when you need it. But I don’t need it very much.”

Skyler, whose life is still an unwritten book at this early age, has a long way to go before his first novel is written. Right now, he’s taking it one page at a time.
