Residential Activities
Boarding students at Hawaii Preparatory Academy may choose from a wide variety of activities throughout the school year. With parental and school permission, students may leave campus on most weekends to go home, visit relatives, or stay with friends. Upper School students who remain on campus on weekends may choose from a variety of planned activities such as visiting Kona or Hilo, relaxing on a Sunday afternoon at the beach, exploring the island with faculty members, or enjoying the many recreational facilities on or near campus. Every Saturday night a movie, dance, or game night is held on the Upper School campus. On Sunday services in the chapel and in town are available, and a bus to the beach is offered after Sunday brunch. Upper School day students are welcome to participate in planned weekend activities.
After School Activities
All HPA students are required to participate in an after school activity. Sports teams from HPA regularly compete against teams from other schools around the island and the state. Students may also select theater, dance, or art as their after school option.
Town Vans
On Wednesday nights, and throughout the weekend, the school provides van transportation to and from the town of Waimea for boarding students. This allows students to shop at the local stores or enjoy a meal off-campus with friends.
Beach Vans
On Sundays, HPA provides van transportation to and from Hapuna Beach for boarding students. This is so much fun!!!
Surprises
To add variety to the residential life, dorm faculty frequently plan "surprise" activities. These can range from an impromptu ice cream party in a faculty apartment, moonlight golf on the soccer field, or cosmic bowling in Kona.
Gates Performing Arts Center (GPAC)
Gates, a 16,000 square foot building, is the heart of HPA's performing arts program. The building consists of 2,782 square feet of stage area, dressing rooms, costume storage, a set construction shop, classrooms, a lobby, a reception area, and a 375 seat auditorium. Gates is used for classes, theatrical productions, musical performances, lectures, and outside performing arts groups.
Olympics
Olympics have been an integral part of the HPA experience since their conception, over 20 years ago. This is a time of class competition, but also of extreme sportsmanship.
