Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk

Pictured are HPA student council members presenting the proceeds check from the Bieni Fun Run to North Hawaii Community Hospital Cancer Center. The cancer center was one of the recipient charities chosen by students of the HPA service learning program. Service learning is a critical element of HPA's curriculum and enables students to realize new ideals, inspire them to reach beyond their personal needs, and improve the world around them.

Pictured with HPA students are Cindy Kamikawa, President of NHCH, and Heidi Roxburg-Edstrom, NHCH Cancer Center Director

Mahalo to all of the volunteers, runners (their pooches), and the Hawai'i community for coming together on Sunday October 16, 2016 to raise awareness for breast cancer and ALS.

Donate to the Bieni Kohler Johnson Memorial Scholarship

The Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk was established in memory of our young friend, wife, mother, and daughter, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2009. Proceeds from this year's event will benefit the Bieni Kohler-Johnson Memorial Scholarship at HPA, as well as ALS Association Golden West Chapter and the North Hawai'i Community Hospital Cancer Center through the HPA student service program.

Bieni Kohler-Johnson grew up on the Big Island and graduated from HPA in 1983. A devoted mother, loving spouse, and passionate athlete, she fought valiantly to defeat breast cancer, sadly losing that battle in June of 2009. The Bieni 5K Fun Run was established that year by her friend and classmate, Liz Noetzel, to honor her memory and to provide support for the scholarship in BIeni's name. Each year, four HPA female student-athletes are selected to receive this distinguished honor in recognition of their gifts in athletics, academics, and/or the arts, and for their commitment to working hard to develop and share those gifts.

Scholarship Criteria

The Ulrike Katharina “Bieni” Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship is intended to help deserving female HPA students follow their dreams. It is awarded annually to students who are not only gifted in athletics, academics or the arts, but who understand their responsibility to work hard to develop and share those gifts. In the spirit of its namesake, the Bieni Kohler-Johnson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to young women who are an inspiration to others, who demonstrates a shining sincerity of commitment, and an unyielding willingness to go the extra mile for friends, family or a worthy cause.
