Water Polo - Girls

Overview

Underwater, things are slow--everything except for Hawai'i Preparatory Academy’s (HPA) water polo team. On the surface the water churns, spectators yell, whistles blow, and the ball whooshes past, but under the water occurs a series of precise moves, toes hooking onto the heels of opponents, or a surreptitious grabbing of any available part of the suit.

Executing accurate passes and shots, one-handed, while treading water in HPA’s crystal clear pool, requires extreme precision, strength, and endurance. Throughout matches and practices, the girls’ legs propel them upward and out of the water, sending sparkling droplets of the pool into the air--they watch, learn, grab, and throw.

“Together, we are strong, but each of our players is strong, individually, too, knowing they have the support from the rest of the team”, says head Coach Greg McKenna.

Coach McKenna, and assistant coaches

Harry Canales and Lauren Prutow are all very supportive and experienced water polo instructors and players, and have been coaching HPA’s fantastic water polo team for years.

Coach McKenna teaches Physics at HPA and lives with his wife, Lauren Prutow and their daughter Zoë, in Robertson Dorm.

“Though the game is fun and exciting, there is a lot of physicality. But you can’t just be strong, you’ve got to be smart too”, says Coach McKenna. To participate in the water polo is to immerse yourself completely into the water and the bonds of a strong team.
