With hearts beating fast and shaky hands squeezing tight around bright red pom poms, the Ka Makani Cheerleaders line up outside the door of their first competition. These twelve girls make up the first squad in HPA history to compete in a BIIF Cheerleading competition. As they run out onto the mat, the crowd holds its breath in anticipation. Hadley Beach and Kaili Yuen nail their roundoff back handsprings, and the team’s nerves melt away.
It is astonishing to see how far Co-Captains Catharine Gussman and Jessica Oh’s idea to start a cheer squad at the end of their sophomore year has come. This team has truly flourished and grown into something much bigger than they expected. Our Cheer team has found success with an abundance of support from parents, the athletic department, and the HPA community.
Led by coaches MJ Allison, Abby Moody, and Tori Schneider, this new team stands tall in its second year as a varsity sport. The windy sidelines of the Ka Makani football games are lit up each week by their passionate energy and big smiles. Other than last cheer season, most of the girls on the team have had no previous cheerleading experience. They have worked very hard together this past season, learning many new techniques and routines. These girls have evolved into a close knit group of sisters. This new team looks forward to continue and grow cheerleading at HPA for many years to come.
