HPA presents the Tony-nominated musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a comedic, musical about a group of eccentric mid-pubescent overachievers as they compete for 1st prize and a ticket to the National Spelling Bee. Overseen by a quirky group of adults, the contestants sing their story, utilize unique spelling techniques and learn that losing doesn’t always make you a loser.
This production is based on a book by Rachel Sheinkin, with music and lyrics by William Finn, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is known for its humor, originality, and audience participation.

Special Note: There are two licensed versions of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and HPA will produce both versions. The original version deals more directly with one of the Spelling Bee contestant’s challenges during the onset of puberty. That version will be performed at the Saturday, November 9, performance. The second version, which deals with the character’s dilemma with greater discretion, will be performed at our November 7, 8 and 10 shows. his version is rated PG-13 due to a small amount of language and subject matter.
