Opening Days 2018

August 12 to 16, 2018

Our student ambassadors, student council, residential prefects, and faculty will all be there to greet and assist you when you arrive for Opening Days in August. Opening Days are your first few days as an HPA student. You’ll receive orientation and important information, become familiar with the campus, and have lots of opportunities to get to know your roommates, classmates, teachers, and administrators. Opening Days are also full of fun! We invite you to bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn and engage with your new community. With just a little effort, you will soon find your place in our wonderful, supportive school.

Hosted by Student Body President Chris Chock '19, you'll hear from our Head of School, Robert McKendry, meet our panel of administrators, and get to know more about our school community.
 
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Ka Makani Showcase - Ko Kākou Student Union
Learn more about some of our signature programs, such as the Outdoor Program, Turtle Tagging, and Student Activities.
 
5:00 to 6:00 p.m. E Komo Mai Welcome Dinner - Kennedy Square
Come and meet faculty, students, the ‘Ohana Association, and other HPA families over dinner.
 
6:30 to 7:30 p.m. New Student Orientation Activities - Castle Gymnasium
Get to know other students and faculty through fun interactive icebreaker games and activities!

8:00 to 9:15 a.m. Registration for Boarding Families with Outstanding Forms Only - Ko Kākou Student Union
Boarding families that have not turned in or completed registration forms, are asked to please come during this time.
 
8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Day Student Locker Sign Up & Vehicle Registration - Kennedy Square
 
8:15 to 9:15 a.m. International Student Workshop - GPAC
International student liaison and ELL faculty member, Mr. Jeff Mix will be speaking about some of the unique challenges and opportunities for international students, as well as where to get support.
 
9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Parent and Student Orientation Workshop - GPAC
Hear from administrators about HPA’s core values, the academic program, Student Life, our Honor and Citizenship systems, and campus safety procedures.
 
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch for Parents and Students - Taylor Commons Dining Hall
 
12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Information Technology Support Breakout Sessions - Math Building and GPAC
Students and parents will learn about our online platforms such as PowerSchool, Family Access Module (FAM), Honu, and more from our IT department and other faculty. Students will meet in small groups in the Math Building, parents will meet in Gates Performing Arts Center.
 
1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Student Support Session for Day Students and Families - Dyer Library
Day students and families will meet our Counselors, Mrs. Crystal Sebastian and Mr. Steve Furchner, as well as our Learning Specialist, Ms. Sara Toga about all the ways students can receive academic and emotional support at HPA.
 
1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Residential Life Information Session - GPAC
Boarding students and families will learn all about the residential program, including our boarding community, the evening schedule, weekend activities, and more, from Mrs. Sarah Schorn ‘98 and Mr. Hamilton Ford ‘05.
 
1:50 to 2:20 p.m. Student Support Session for Boarding Students and Families - GPAC

This fun and interactive assembly will provide an opportunity for students to consider their goals for the year ahead, reflect on this transitional time, and say goodbye to boarding parents.

5:00 to 8:00 p.m. E Hui Mai Farm to Table Dinner for Parents - Waiki’i Ranch
For families who have already RSVP'd, buses will be departing from GPAC on the HPA campus. Families unable to attend the event can return to their home or hotel as this is the last event for parents during orientation.

Swim tests will begin at 8:15 a.m., 9:15 a.m., and 10:15 a.m. at Dowsett Pool. Concussion protocol sessions will begin at 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. at the Technology Center.

Sophomore Class of 2021 - Service Project, Activities, and Big Waterslide
Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where to Meet: Dyer Library
What to Bring: Comfortable clothing for the service project, swimwear, towel, dry clothes, sunscreen, hat/glasses, and a water bottle.

Junior Class of 2020 - Garden Service Project, Activities, Hapuna Beach Excursion
Time: 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Where to Meet: Ko Kākou Student Union
What to Bring: Comfortable clothing for the service project, swimwear, towel, dry clothes, sunscreen, hat/glasses, and a water bottle.

Senior Class of 2019 - Hike to the Ka Makani Tree, Activities, and Pool Party
Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where to Meet: Castle Gymnasium
What to Bring: Comfortable clothing for hiking, hiking shoes/boots, swimwear, towel, dry clothes, sunscreen, hat/glasses, water bottle, and rain jacket.
 
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Town Vans to Waimea Shopping Center for Boarding Students
Buses will depart from Perry-Fiske Parking Lot.
