FAQ on Planned Giving

  • What is Planned Giving?

Planned giving allows you to support HPA in a way that best suits your individual circumstances, through a variety of giving strategies. Many planned gifts require no payments while you are living; others may actually increase your income. The goal of planned giving is to help you to achieve your charitable and financial goals as an important piece of your overall estate and financial planning. Learn more about the different ways to give here.

  • Is my estate big enough to leave a planned gift?

Yes! Gifts of any size are deeply appreciated and make a genuine difference for HPA. Many people choose to leave a percentage of their estate, which scales up or down with your estate size.

  • Why make a planned gift?

A planned gift to HPA enables you to leave a permanent legacy that will support our mission to provide exceptional learning opportunities in a diverse community honoring the traditions of Hawai‘i.

  • How do I make a planned gift?

There are many ways to leave a legacy to HPA. You can leave a bequest in your Will or Trust, or designate HPA as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance policy, investment account, CD, or bank account. There are also gifts that give back to you by providing income for life and gifts that help you minimize income and estate taxes for you and your family.

These are just some of the many creative ways to support HPA. For more information, reach out to Kim Younger, Strategic Engagement Coordinator, at (808) 881-4058 or kyounger@hpa.edu. Or you can fill out this form to get started and we will contact you—mahalo!

  • How much of my gift is tax deductible?

The amount of your income tax deductions depends on the type of gift you make to HPA. For example, if you establish a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust, which pays income to you during your life, the full value of the amount you use to fund the gift is not deductible, as a portion will be returned to you.

HPA is a tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Direct gifts to HPA are tax deductible, though donors are encouraged to consult their own professional tax advisor.

  • Will HPA draft my Will for me?

HPA can provide you with sample language for your attorney to leave a bequest to HPA in your Will or Trust, but is not authorized to draft your Will. The Advancement Office is able to help you complete the beneficiary designation form from your financial institution or insurance company. This is an easy and flexible way to leave your permanent legacy at HPA.

  • Can HPA be the Executor of my Estate?

We are not able to serve as Executor, but HPA is able to serve as a Trustee of a charitable trust that benefits the school.

  • Can I designate my gift to a specific purpose at HPA?

Absolutely. Many donors choose to direct their estate gift toward an area of HPA that is especially meaningful to them, such as financial aid, programmatic support, programs, or campus spaces. Documenting your plans with us helps ensure we clearly understand your intentions and can honor them in the future. If you have a specific purpose in mind, we would be happy to work with you to make sure your gift reflects your wishes and aligns with HPA’s long-term priorities.

  • Can I make my gift in honor or in memory of someone?

Of course, you just need to provide that information when making the gift.

  • What is the legal name, address, and Federal Tax ID of HPA?

    Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy

    65-1692 Kohala Mountain Road
    Kamuela, HI 96743

    Tax ID: 99-0078306
