Middle School: New Student Hub

Welcome to the Middle School

We are so happy that you and your ʻohana will be joining our Middle School community.

At HPA, we are committed to helping students grow into Confident Navigators — young people who are grounded in their values and prepared to engage thoughtfully with the world around them. This work is grounded in Mālama Kaiāulu, where our connections (pilina), responsibility (kuleana), unity (lōkahi), and storytelling (haʻina) shape how we learn and grow together. We look forward to supporting your child and partnering with your family along this journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Middle School experience at HPA?

Middle School at HPA is a bridge between childhood and adolescence—designed to support academic growth while helping students navigate increasing independence, responsibility, and self-awareness. Students are challenged academically while developing strong character grounded in HPA’s core values.

  • What is the phone/technology policy in Middle School?

The HPA Middle School is phone-free. Students are required to keep their phones secured in Yondr pouches throughout the school day to support focus, reduce distractions, and strengthen in-person connection and community.

    • Phones are not accessible during the school day
    • Communication with families happens through the school office when needed
    • This policy helps students build healthy digital habits and be fully present in their learning environment

Additionally, misuse of phones or social media—especially involving cyberbullying or inappropriate communication—is taken seriously and may result in disciplinary action.

  • What does a typical academic program include?

Students take a full range of core courses including English, math, science, social studies, world language, physical education, and the arts. The program blends direct instruction with project-based learning, building skills in collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

  • What is Advisory and why is it important?

Advisory is a cornerstone of the Middle School experience. Students meet daily in small groups with a faculty advisor who supports their academic progress, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. It helps ensure every student feels known, supported, and connected.

  • How much homework should we expect?

Homework is structured to support learning without overwhelming students. A general guideline is 20–25 minutes per class, with clear communication and advance notice for major assignments.

  • How are students assessed and how will we stay informed?

Families receive quarterly academic reports, and parents can monitor progress anytime through myHPA. Conferences (including student-led conferences) provide opportunities to discuss growth, strengths, and areas for improvement.

  • What support is available for students?

HPA offers robust support through counseling, the Student Success Team (SST), and learning specialists. These resources help address academic, organizational, and social-emotional needs, ensuring each student has a plan for success if challenges arise.

  • How does HPA approach student behavior and discipline?

The Middle School emphasizes self-regulation and restorative practices. Students are guided to reflect on their choices, repair relationships, and grow from mistakes, with increasing expectations for independence and accountability.

  • What experiential learning opportunities are available?

Experiential learning is a defining part of the Middle School experience at HPA. Students participate in field trips and Theme Week, immersive experiences that connect learning to Hawaiʻi Island through environmental exploration, cultural engagement, and service learning.

  • How does HPA partner with families during Middle School?

HPA values strong communication and partnership. Families are encouraged to stay engaged through myHPA, advisor updates, and direct communication with teachers. Working together is key to supporting students during this important developmental stage.
