2022-2023 Annual Report

Fueling our mission: the impact of your giving is felt far and wide across two campuses serving more than 600 students

Gratitude and reciprocity are an essential part of any community — especially those, like our school, that were built with love and conviction for the purpose of serving others. Throughout the course of our long history, Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy has been sustained by ‘ohana both near and far, and we flourish when trust, collaboration, and generosity of spirit flow freely. We believe that what we have together at HPA is worthy of celebrating and sustaining, and we take this opportunity every year to thank you sincerely for your part in this important work!

Mahalo, HPA’s Annual Report, is a collection of our thanks. Mahalo… we could not do this important work without you!

FISCAL YEAR PERFORMANCE

THE HPA ENDOWMENT

The endowment is an important part of the school’s overall fiscal health and stability. Our donors’ commitment to the endowment supports the school’s vitality and solidifies their legacy with the school.

The total value of the HPA endowment as of June 30, 2023 was $27,112,743. In the 2022-2023 fiscal year, the Board of Trustees elected to draw approximately 4.5% of the Endowment for a total just over $1 million to support the needs of the school. Of this, approximately 42% is reserved for financial aid, and 19% is dedicated to building maintenance and restricted programming. The remaining 39% is board-designating funding. For FY23, the Board voted to put these funds toward financial aid.

HPA’s Board is watching the performance of the endowment closely and working with our Fund Managers, BNY Mellon, to ensure our long-term investment philosophy will help us weather positive and negative years.

Secured one Middle School Theme Week camping permit for Kīholo Bay. Middle School Theme Week is using the Mālama Kaiāulu lens to connect our students to organizations on the island working in areas of cultural and environmental sustainability, as well as fostering a sense of love and aloha for our island home.

$60

Went toward pickleball supplies for Middle School Physical Education. Games and movement are critical components of educating the whole child at HPA.

$100

Helped to purchase new garden gloves for our youngest gardeners in the Ulumau garden. In addition to the very literal hands-on learning that happens in the Village Campus garden and the Upper School’s Ulu Mālama garden, together, our campus gardens contribute hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to eight different community groups working to alleviate hunger on Hawai‘i Island.

$250

Kept HPA’s horses supplied with alfalfa cubes and mineral supplements for one week. The HPA herd is beloved by generations of Ka Makani. Bloodlines include thoroughbred, quarter horse, Morgan, and Mauna Kea — and this diversity gives students a wide range of riding and care experience.

$500

Provided a year’s worth of art supplies for local elementary students participating in the Community Arts Program at Isaacs Art Center. HPA’s Community Arts Program at IAC helps to meet the increasingly crucial need for arts education in our community at no cost to participating schools.

$900

Funded numerous database subscriptions that provide both our Upper and Village Campus libraries with reliable resources to support student research, curriculum delivery, and literacy skills.

$5,000

Supported professional development opportunities for all faculty and staff, including workshops on integrating social-emotional health into daily learning, as well as continuing our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

$13,282

Was the average financial aid award for the 2022-23 school year. Financial aid remains vital to sustaining a healthy and open school community where students from many backgrounds can find a sense of belonging.
