Justina Wood ’08, Assistant Director of Admission

Justina “Stina” Wood ’08, already a familiar presence on campus as the assistant girls’ soccer coach, has recently taken on a new role as Assistant Director of Admission at HPA. Stina grew up on S.C. Ranch, in Pa’auilo Mauka, and earned a B.A. in Communication from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. She has lived in Sacramento, Portland, and Dallas. Prior to joining HPA, she was the manager of the Paniolo Heritage Center at Pukalani Stables.

What is your favorite place on the island?

I really enjoy being up country in Pa’auilo where I grew up. Some of my favorite memories are times spent working on the ranch with my dad. I think for me it is more about who I am surrounded with than where I am. I enjoy spending time with my family, in the rodeo arena, being out in the country, hanging out with friends and enjoying the simple things in life.

Where did life take you after you graduated from HPA?

After high school, I was fortunate to be accepted into Willamette University in Salem, Oregon — my dream school. I owe a great deal to Ms. Montgomery, who guided me through the college admissions process. While my time there was rewarding, after two years, I made the decision to transfer to University of Hawaii at Hilo, where I completed my degree.

A pivotal moment in my journey came when I joined the UH cross country team. Coach Jaime Guerpo didn’t just train me to be an excellent runner, he instilled in me a sense of confidence and resilience I didn’t know I possessed. This newfound strength gave me the courage to move to the mainland. I was eager to redefine myself and embrace experiences I hadn’t been exposed to back on the Big Island.

What brought you back to Hawai‘i?

I returned when the pandemic hit, intending it to be a temporary move. Serendipitously, I found myself working at the Paniolo Preservation Society, and for the first time in years, I felt truly connected to my roots. The opportunity to preserve and honor the culture and lifestyle I grew up with was profoundly fulfilling.

Can you tell me a little about coaching? Did you play soccer as a student at HPA?

Yes, I played all four years of high school, and I’ve been coaching for three years. The players on the team are a constant source of inspiration, fueling my passion and excitement every time I step out on the field.

How does your experience coaching align with your new role in Admission?

For me coaching has always been about building meaningful connections with students. I’ve had the privilege of coaching high school sports since I was in college at Keaau High. Then in Oregon and now back at HPA. What I cherish most isn’t just helping the student grow athletically, but also guiding them in developing life skills, fostering friendships, and creating lasting connections both on and off the field. Being able to now help a student gain the opportunity to attend HPA is very fulfilling and an honor, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to give back in this way.

When you aren’t on the field or working to connect great kids to HPA, what do you enjoy doing?

I’ve recently reconnected with my roots, trading some of my heels for cowboy boots and getting back in the saddle. My horse, Cash, has taught me so much about patience, consistency, and teamwork. I enjoy roping and barrel racing, which keeps my competitive spirit alive. It’s also an opportunity to spend time with my dad, who has always enjoyed riding and roping.
