Generosity has been at the core of Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy since its inception, enabling the school to offer an exceptional education that nurtures the unique development of each student. A big part of that is the HPA Fund, which benefits every member of the Ka Makani ʻohana.
As we explore the extraordinary facets of HPA, from scientific exploration in our Energy Lab to Hawaiian studies at the Village Campus, we understand the vital role that the HPA Fund plays in enhancing every aspect of learning and life within our community.
HPA’s Director of Alumni & Parent Giving Zaheva Knowles P’28 took time to answer some of the frequently asked questions about the HPA Fund and dive into the impact it makes.
What is the primary purpose of the HPA Fund, and why is it important for the school?
The HPA Fund makes the HPA student experience possible every day. The Fund is our annual fund and its purpose is to provide unrestricted support across all program areas – from our playgrounds and playing fields to our libraries, classrooms, art studios, and experiential learning. Every gift to the Fund makes an immediate impact.
How does the HPA Fund benefit students, faculty, and the broader school community?
The Fund essentially closes the “gap” between tuition and the cost of the HPA experience. As a general rule, tuition covers approximately 80% of the cost of an HPA education, the HPA Fund covers the additional 20%. Together, they ensure we continue to provide outstanding faculty, thriving athletics programs, two libraries, two gardens, horse and marine science programs, access to financial aid, and countless opportunities to learn and grow.
Are there any specific goals or targets for the current HPA Fund effort that you can share with us?
Yes, this year, like last, our HPA Fund goal is $1 million dollars. Our hope is that everyone in our school ʻohana feels inspired to make a gift – every dollar makes a difference and helps create the magic!
Why is 100% participation from all families such an important, and achievable, goal?
Getting to 100% participation affirms that we are all invested in HPA and believe in the mission and vision of this special place. On a practical level, it provides crucial resources for programs and helps us secure additional funding from our foundation and non-profit funders, who like to see that our community is all-in for HPA.
Can you share any success stories or notable achievements attributed to the HPA Fund’s contributions over the years?
The HPA Fund touches every aspect of the HPA experience, so sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint a specific achievement. That said, the new playground structure at the Village Campus is a direct result of support for the HPA Fund last year. Mahalo Ka Makani!
