There’s so much to do here. HPA has given me room and support to step forward and try new things. It feels amazing when you realize—Oh my gosh, I have abilities I never knew I had before!”
—Eighth-grader
Our regular classes and enrichment offerings include tons of exciting, unusual, place-based learning experiences. But the Middle School holds even more ways to have fun and try new things. It’s easy to make true friends in the process, and teachers and classmates are always there to cheer you on.
Social Events
Students organize dances, lip-sync competitions, talent shows, and other fun events, often with the help of parents in the ‘Ohana Association.
Sea Turtle Research
This signature program is active at both the Middle and Upper Schools, involving students in hands-on marine science fieldwork.
Service Learning
Across all our school divisions, we value giving back. Service learning takes us out beyond campus to care for our island home, and communities beyond.
Makahiki Games
Every year, our students learn and develop mastery in traditional Hawaiian Makahiki games and then have an opportunity to represent HPA at the annual Kā Moku o Keawe Makahiki Festival.
Ulumau Garden
Our campus garden engages students in hands-on, sustainability leadership and fosters a deep sense of respect for their place on our island.
Author Visits
We’re a campus that loves to read. We regularly invite well-known authors, such as Kwame Alexander, Ellen Entrada Kelly, or Graham Salisbury ’63 to spend a day with us on campus.
‘Ukulele Festival
Every year since 1993, we’ve collaborated with other island schools to perform for our community with ‘ukulele strumming and picking, group and solo playing, singing, drama, and dance.
Capstone Hō‘ike
Each spring we celebrate the capstone work of our eighth grade class with an open house for the HPA ‘ohana and the local community.
