Middle School (6-8)

This is a place to discover yourself and grow toward independence.

In Middle School, we help our students cross the bridge from childhood to adolescence. At each developmental turning point, we partner with families and guide students according to their individual needs and our shared core values. We believe in the importance of a liberal arts perspective, and our curriculum is carefully designed to nurture well-rounded individuals while also spurring intellectual growth from grade to grade. We also embrace the richness of Hawai‘i Island to create extraordinary place-based learning. Our students are highly prepared for the HPA Upper School. Above all, our Middle School is family—an ‘ohana filled with aloha, where students discover lifelong friends, celebrate each other’s talents, and grow into good and capable human beings.

Our teachers distinguish HPA

Meet some of the fascinating and deeply devoted individuals who make HPA special, from the Middle School all the way through high school graduation.

In my free time, I’m a songwriter and performer. I also love writing about music; I’m interested in things like the history of slack key guitar or the origins of the ‘ukulele in Hawai’i.”

Dagan Bernstein ’97, Middle School math teacher

We often think history is something that is ‘done,’ and we know what happened, but I try to get my students to see that we’re putting a story together based on the evidence we have.”
