What's Happening at HPA This Week?

Message from the Head of School

Aloha HPA ʻohana,

It was at my grandmother Lena “Birdie”  Natale’s celebration of life last weekend that I first heard this story.

Ours is a family made up of Italian and Irish folks—62 direct descendants before you even begin adding the rest of the family and friends who gathered to celebrate 96 beautiful years. You can’t get much luckier than that.

As the story goes, Big Dave, my eldest uncle on that side of the family, once traveled to the birthplace of his grandmother Josephine—Birdie’s mother—in the northernmost part of Italy, above Lake Como.

Big Dave entered a small shop in a small town and asked the owner if he knew any Peduzzis, Birdie’s maiden name. My uncle spoke no Italian, and the shop owner spoke no English, so they did their best with smiles, laughter, gestures, and the simplest of exchanges.

All Big Dave really came away with was the phrase the shop owner kept repeating with a smile:

“Tutti Peduzzi.”

Continuing his quest, Dave made his way to the town cemetery. There, headstone after headstone carried the same last name: Peduzzi.

And suddenly he understood.

Tutti Peduzzi. We’re all Peduzzis.

I’ve been carrying that story with me for the past few days.

The night I left campus for my grandmother’s funeral and family celebration, we welcomed our PreK–8 families into Hale ʻĪnana for an afternoon of campus tours, introductions, conversation, and a good number of handshakes and hugs.

I returned to the island to welcome our 9–12 families for ʻOhana Days. It was an electric few days—cocktails at Isaac’s, classroom visits, teacher meetings, information sessions, athletics galore, and, most importantly, plenty of opportunities for connection.

These bookends of my time away reminded me of how special gathering and connections are – especially with people tied to the same place.

It doesn’t take long to feel the energy here at HPA.

Talk with a PreK–5 student, a middle schooler, or a high schooler and you feel it. Better yet, run into an alum, a current parent, or a former parent somewhere far from campus and somehow it is still there.

The connection. The quiet confidence. The generous smile. That unmistakable sense that we share something.

Maybe that little shop owner above Lake Como understood something bigger than Uncle Dave realized at the time. There is something powerful about knowing that wherever we go, we belong to something larger than ourselves.

Tutti Ka Makani.

We’re all Ka Makani.

Have a wonder-filled weekend.

Gratefully,

Fred Wawner
Head of School

School Bulletins for the Week of 10/9/26

Lower School

Each week, K–5 families receive updates highlighting joyful moments, meaningful lessons, and a glimpse into what students and parents can look forward to in the weeks ahead.

News & notes

Aloha Lower School ʻOhana!

What a wonderful showing of determination, perseverance, and community spirit at last weekend’s K–5 Keiki Triathlon! Our students took on a big challenge, pushed themselves physically and mentally, and demonstrated our core value of Pursuit of Excellence in action.

While we were certainly proud of each student who attended the event for taking on this challenge and crossing the finish line, what stood out to me was the tremendous encouragement and support our keiki showed one another. Throughout the event, students enthusiastically cheered on their classmates, joined friends during the final stretches of their runs, and offered words of positivity and encouragement to help one another finish strong. We are proud of our keiki for embodying lōkahi and pilina — the understanding that our individual accomplishments are made even more meaningful when we lift one another up along the way. We hope our young athletes carry with them not only the pride of having completed something difficult, but also the joy of knowing they helped others succeed.

Mahalo nui to all the families who joined us and to our many wonderful parent volunteers who helped with setup, donated snacks and treats, cheered on our athletes, and stayed to help with cleanup. Events like these are made possible through the generosity and shared kuleana of our Village Campus ʻohana. We are so grateful!

K-5 Specialist Class 3Rs: Remind, Redirect, Reflect
As we continue through the school year, we would like to share a reminder about our approach to supporting positive student behavior, particularly during our Specialist classes. Consistent expectations across all learning environments help our keiki feel supported, understand boundaries, and develop responsibility for their choices.

Our 3Rs approach—Remind, Redirect, Reflect—provides a consistent framework for guiding students toward positive choices:

  • Remind: Students are reminded of expectations and given an opportunity to make a positive choice.
  • Redirect: If a behavior continues, teachers provide a clear redirection to help students reset and reengage appropriately.
  • Reflect: When additional support is needed, students are guided through reflection on their choices, their impact on others, and how they can move forward positively.

This approach is rooted in our core values of Respect and Integrity, as well as kuleana—taking responsibility for our actions and their impact on our community. Our goal is to help children develop the self-awareness, accountability, and decision-making skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

Mahalo for your partnership in reinforcing these expectations and supporting our students as they learn, grow, and make thoughtful choices each day.

Video Highlight of the Week: Keiki Triathlon

Middle School

Each week, 6–8 families receive updates reflecting on recent activities and accomplishments, along with a preview of what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.

News & notes

Aloha Middle School Families,

This year’s Middle School Theme Week gave us much to celebrate. Our sixth graders harvested 600,000 native seeds — 400,000 ʻaweoweo and 200,000 ʻaʻaliʻi — along with a truck bed of kō. Our seventh graders removed 986 pieces of trash, approximately 40 pounds, from Pololū Valley. Our eighth graders planted 300 native plants, reinforced nearly 100 feet of trail with sustainable wood, and created 50 kalaʻau for their hula practice. They also offered chants and hoʻokupu at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and the Keauhou Three Mountain Alliance Forest Reserve. These tangible contributions brought Mālama Kaiāulu to life through care for our island’s places, ecosystems, and cultural practices.

As inspiring as these numbers are, the impact of Theme Week becomes even more beautiful when we consider the growth of pilina among our students. As adults, we want students to engage in productive, meaningful mālama and work. For our students, much of the beauty also lives in the moments between that work, when relationships grow, change, and become stronger. When they reminisce, they may recall playing flag football or basketball during downtime at Kīlauea Military Camp, or a friendly debate between stations at the Alex & Duke De Rego water safety workshop. These moments help make a shared experience personally meaningful.

One of the most inspiring moments at Puanui brought that work and connection together. Students spontaneously created their own kō-processing “factory,” inventing roles and bringing incredible enthusiasm to the task. It was hilarious, collaborative, and completely student generated. Within a thoughtfully designed engagement with our island, students found room to create something of their own. Their energy and joy became part of the work itself, strengthening connections as they contributed together.

The seeds harvested, plants placed in the ground, and litter removed are lasting contributions. So, too, are the relationships nurtured along the way. Mahalo to the faculty, staff, and community partners who made space for both: the meaningful work of caring for our island and the everyday moments that help our students grow together.

Theme Week marks the conclusion our first quarter of instruction and signals that our Parent-Teacher conferences are approaching. Be on the lookout for conference window sign ups from our Village Campus Office. Very quickly after, our all school HPA Spirit Week, Village Campus Makahiki Games, and recess Spikeball tournaments move our students through an eventful conclusion to our 1st semester. Mahalo nui loa for your support during Theme Week and these essential school community events and activities that support our incredible Academic program!

Aloha,

Michael Cservenak

What is the PSAT?

Freshmen
The PSAT 8/9 is the first digital assessment in the College Board’s SAT Suite of Assessments, designed for 8th- and 9th-grade students to establish a baseline for college and career readiness. It measures the same knowledge and skills as the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT, but is tailored to younger students. The exam includes a Reading and Writing section as well as a Math section, and results provide valuable insights into student progress and areas for improvement in preparation for future assessments and college. Registration has been completed for all freshmen.

Sophomores and Juniors
The PSAT/NMSQT for sophomores and juniors is a preliminary version of the SAT, allowing students to gauge their readiness in reading, writing, and math. For juniors, it also serves as the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Registration has been completed for all sophomores and juniors.

Residential Life

We have now passed the half-way point of the semester, and our community is running strong! For the first eight weeks of the year, we focused our community meetings on creating connections with each other, getting to know one another at a deeper level, and building capacity for care. Now, as we head into the next eight weeks, our focus will shift towards the Kuleana, or Responsibility and Privilege, that we each have for each other. Whether about upholding community norms, respecting one another’s boundaries, understanding consent, or caring for our place and land, we hope to explore the many different ways that our students have the obligation and opportunity to care for others, their home, and through these things, themselves.

Safety Protocols

Campus Access
Campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.

If a family member of a student needs to meet with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, please contact them to arrange a meeting on campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.

At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.

If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.

  • Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately. Follow up with your supervisor ASAP.
  • Anything out of the ordinary: email Dan Wilkinson, HPA Security Supervisor at dwilkinson@hpa.edu

CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message), and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.

Safe2SpeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.

All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
