Football

You have to be dedicated. This is not a sport for leisure and you’re gonna be pushed a lot. Working hard, knowing your muscles are gonna be hurt, and you’re gonna learn things that will benefit yourself.”

Lincoln Kalama, HPA Head Football Coach

The HPA football program is steeped in tradition, having won some of the earliest BIIF championships, including a run of five titles over a six-year span in the 1960s.  While we may not have the numbers of some of the larger schools on the island, HPA’s gridiron warriors learn multiple positions, and there is rarely a clean jersey seen on the sideline after the game. It’s the definition of team-first football, and there’s plenty of playing time to go around.

Head coach Lincoln Kalama took the reins of the program in 2023. Kalama has been a part of the HPA coaching staff since 1999.

To date, Ka Makani has produced two notable players for the NFL. Max Unger ’04 spent his college career with the Oregon Ducks, going on to play for the Seattle Seahawks (where he helped win Super Bowl XLVII) and then the New Orleans Saints. The late Daniel Te‘o-Nesheim ’05 played college ball for the University of Washington Huskies, followed by stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returned to coach the HPA football team before his untimely death in 2017.
