To enjoy a round of golf one must: be patient, stay in the moment, be respectful of others, harness the power of emotions, be willing to work hard and never give up, and be willing to do the right thing even when no one is watching.
To enjoy life: see above.”
—HPA head coach Ken Zecchini
While the Big Island is known for its sun, surf, and beaches, the island also offers some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, which HPA students on the golf team get to experience through the season.
HPA has both boys and girls teams, competing in the spring as individuals and as a team in the BIIF tournament. Those who take on the sport have the unique opportunity to use the practice facilities at the Hapuna Golf Course and Waikoloa Beach Resort, and also to play the WikiWiki par-3 course at the Mauna Lani Resort.
On Friday afternoons, the team will play until the sun sets at Hualalai, which is home of the PGA Champions Mitsubishi Electric Championship event. Every January, Hall of Fame names like Fred Couples, Tom Watson, and Bernhard Langer take to the same 18 holes.
Six regular season tournaments are played at a mixture of private, resort, and public golf courses across the island. Players invited to the BIIF tournament earn a chance to punch their ticket to the state tournament, which rotates to different world-class courses around the state.
