Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong
Aloha Lower School families,
The campus is bustling with activities always, especially at this time of year. For the safety of our keiki, families may arrive up to 15 minutes prior to pickup time. Cars that arrive to campus earlier than 15 minutes prior to pick up time will be instructed to return at the appropriate time, or you may choose to wait in the VC office where you will be checked in and receive a guest badge.
Additionally, as with all of our classrooms and learning spaces, a visit to Ulumau Garden requires an appointment and check-in at the front office. The garden is an inviting place, and we welcome all families to come with an appointment and check-in at the front office.
Please note for student and employee safety, all adults have name tags, whether an employee or guest. Adults without badges will gain the attention of community members and will be reported. Thank you for supporting our safety measures to keep our community safe by checking in at our office prior to going to an appointment or leaving the near proximity of your vehicle.
Yearbooks
Our Village Campus yearbooks have arrived! Books are being sorted and will be distributed to students to take home on Monday, May 20. Students may bring their yearbooks back to school on Tuesday, May 21, when they will have opportunities to sign them during the school day. This letter details our Lower School guidelines for respectful signing and care of our yearbooks. If you did not order one and would like to, please reach out to Aunty Lynn (lkakugawa@hpa.edu) in the office, who can help arrange the purchase. The cost is $50 per yearbook.
Join Robotics in the 24/25 School Year!
Robotics is a team of 4th-8th graders that is more than simply building and coding robots. Teams also work together on engineering design projects that solve real-world problems in a fun and creative way. Student can choose their teammates or come seeking teammates. Robotics is an amazing opportunity for all students. It provides a place for competition, collaboration, friendship, and, importantly, where students can find belonging. K-8 EdTech Specialist, Mrs. Mellon Monello is sharing the below interest-inquiry Google Form so that we can plan the amount of teams for our upcoming school year. Please take a look!

Mrs. Alexa Hustace, K-5 Art Teacher, is thrilled to announce our K-5 Wā Pilina Artists’ Exhibition. Let’s celebrate a year of art-making at our wā pilina artist receptions! On Monday, May 13, your child will showcase a favorite artwork and connect with fellow artists at Isaacs Art Center. Please take note of the different reception times for each grade level on the flyer below. They are paired in their Wā Pilina partnerships, an opportunity to connect across grade levels, mentor, and learn from one another. Whether younger or older, our students connect in the spirit of pilina and haʻina. If you are unable to attend on May 13, the exhibition is running from May 6 to 17, so you may also view it at your leisure. Isaacs Art Center is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Lower School Rainbow Day

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
We wanted to remind everyone that with so much happening on campus these days and classes still in session up to dismissal time, we ask that families do not arrive earlier than 15 minutes before pick-up time. Families arriving earlier than 15 minutes prior to their pickup time will be instructed to return at the appropriate time or visit the Village Campus office, where you can wait.
We recognize that the Ulumau Garden is an inviting place, but please recognize that it is also a classroom, and a visit requires an appointment and check-in at the front office.
We hope you were able to catch our Performing Arts Showcase this afternoon. A big congratulations to all the students for their performances, and a big mahalo to Ms. Wadlegger and Ms. DiBartolo for their work with the students!
As we get down to the last days of school, we still have plenty more in the tank and lots of great things going on. Next week, our grade 7 has a particularly exciting week. They will get started on Wednesday with Water Safety Ocean Awareness Education, which begins with classroom instruction in preparation for a full-day introduction to water safety awareness at Hāpuna Beach facilitated by Hāpuna lifeguards on Friday, May 17. Here is a video about the program, which was introduced to us by grade 8 Capstone student Reece Lustik, who helped us organize this opportunity. Mahalo, Reece!
On Thursday, May 16, during Experiential Time, Grade 7 will host an ‘Olympics’ with Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 students. One of their stations will be tin can bowling and they could use some help gathering 8 oz. tin cans. We have a few, but need 20 total. Please recycle any cans you use in the next week and send them in with your student.
After that, we are down to our last few days of school! On Monday, May 20, we will have an ‘All Classes’ day to wrap up the year in each class. We will also distribute yearbooks that morning. We will remind students to always be kind and respectful with what they write in others’ yearbooks and to not write anything they wouldn’t want teachers and parents to also read. It is also important for students to write their names on the inside cover and to remember to not use permanent markers for signing as they can bleed through the pages.
If you have pre-paid for yearbooks there is no further action needed. If you have not pre-paid, we do have extra editions printed, and you may purchase one by contacting Aunty Lynn at villagecampusoffice@hpa.edu. If you have not pre-ordered a yearbook and would like to, please contact villagecampusoffice@hpa.edu.
Tuesday, May 21, will be class retreats for Grades 6 and 7 and Transition Ceremony rehearsal for Grade 8. Please note that all grade 8 students should be dropped off at Gates Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, May 21. They will return to the Village Campus later in the day for normal afternoon pick-up at the Village Campus. Drop-off and pick-up for Grade 6 and 7 students will be as normal at the Village Campus on Tuesday, May 21.
Wednesday, May 22, will mark our last day of school and the 8th-grade Transition Ceremony at Gates Performing Arts Center. Once again, Grade 8 students will be dropped off at GPAC. Grade 6 and 7 students will be dropped off at the Village Campus. The Ceremony starts at 10:00 am, and all are welcome. Grade 6 and 7 students will be bused up for the ceremony.
Please note that Wednesday, May 22, is a half day of school, and pick-up for all students on Wednesday, May 22, is 11:00 am at Gates Performing Arts Center.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Mahalo,

Glenn Chickering

Upper School
From the desk of Mark Noetzel, Assistant Head of School for Student Life
Aloha Upper School families,
The end of the school year is upon us, and it is natural for some students to experience heightened anxiety as they prepare for exams and say goodbye to friends. The bonds of friendship are strong, and the expectations that students place upon themselves for academic success are often at the highest levels. Let’s be mindful of this and offer them the support and encouragement they need to navigate through this challenging period. Our words and actions can make a significant difference in helping alleviate their stress and boosting their confidence.
Exams and Leaving Campus
During the exam period, students will only need to be on campus during their scheduled exams. Please discuss your expectations with your child(ren) about leaving campus between exams or once they have completed their commitments for the day. Students who do not have the first exam of the day may elect not to arrive on campus until their test begins.
Locker Clean Out
Day students are asked to clean out their lockers prior to leaving campus for the last time this semester and to notify the upper school academic office.
School Safety
Please note for student and employee safety, all adults have name tags, whether an employee or guest. Adults without badges will gain the attention of community members and will be reported. Thank you for supporting our safety measures to keep our community safe by checking in at our offices prior to going to an appointment. The offices of Business, Advancement, Admissions, Student Life, Head of School, College Counseling, and others all have appropriate badges that will identify you as a guest to the campus.

Residential Life
The last week in Residential Life has been a whirlwind of activities, including our last Formal Dinner of the year, the Dorm Wars finale, and the start of what may be a new tradition — Food Truck Friday! At a time when students are focusing on their AP exams, upcoming final assessments and projects, and preparing to leave for the summer or college, we take the time to honor our traditions and forge new ones.
This year, the elected Dorm Representatives wanted to make the final Formal Dinner of the year a festive occasion to say farewell to our seniors. In addition to an excellent meal, students in grades 9 through 11 participated in a secret ballot to nominate all of our grade 12 boarding students for “awards” dreamt up by the Dorm Representatives themselves, ranging from a “Future Leader Award” to “Best Mullet Award,” “Microwave Master Chef Award,” and many more! These awards were delivered last night during Formal Dinner, bringing levity and perhaps an early sense of nostalgia before the seniors truly depart.
The other award of the evening was the announcement of this year’s Dorm Wars champions! Dorm Wars is an annual, year-long competition between the three dormitories, played out through various games and challenges, also thought up by the elected Dorm Representatives. We had an exciting competition this year, with Carter Hall falling far behind going into Winter Break but rallying hard in the Spring, and as we returned from Spring Break, all 3 dorms were tied in points. It all came down to our Finale last Sunday, where students played spirited games of street hockey, a fruit-roll-up eating contest, and a relay of moving M&M’s across the road using only chopsticks. In the end, strong leadership and determination won out, and one dorm dominated the day. Congratulations to the 2023-2024 Dorm Wars champions: Perry-Fiske Hall!
Finally, although much of this past week was dedicated to the completion of some of our annual traditions, we also keep our eyes on the future and tried bringing a local food truck, owned and operated by an HPA alumna, to sell hot and fresh malasadas, açai bowls, and many other treats, as students finished their classes on Friday afternoon. Originally asked to stay from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, demand was so high that they continued to offer service until 6:30 pm. We look forward to continuing this tradition next year!

College Resources for Senior Families
A heartfelt congratulations to our seniors on completing their Capstone projects! It was inspiring to see the breadth and depth of topics that our Class of 2024 Ka Makani tackled, and the professionalism and passion with which they presented their final projects.
The month of May brings many significant milestones for our seniors, including deciding which college to attend. We know it can be a lot to navigate for students and parents alike. We are here to help, whether by talking through college options, offering support and guidance, or helping to interpret financial aid packages. Please reach out to us at college@hpa.edu if you need us.
For your reference, we are including two articles that we hope you will find useful.

College Rejection: How to Take the Sting Out of Difficult News
We also recommend Karen Coburn’s Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years as an excellent parent resource for processing the transition to college.
We look forward to our continued work with you!
Which College Should I Choose?
If your student has received acceptance letters from multiple colleges, the next step will be deciding which college is the best fit. Don’t worry about choosing that one “perfect” college — there’s no such thing. We have lots of tools for helping students decide where to attend, so please reach out to us. We’re happy to help. For more details, you can also reference this email sent earlier this week.
College Financial Aid
College affordability is a major part of the picture for many HPA families. If this is the case for you, you are not alone. Please talk with your family about which college option(s) work best for you financially. The College Board has a good resource for helping families compare financial aid awards.
We realize this year is uniquely challenging owing to delays with the FAFSA. Many colleges and universities are offering deposit deadline extensions, so please check the websites of your individual colleges. If you have any questions about financial aid or how to interpret or compare financial aid awards, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
I’ve Chosen my College! Now What?
Once your student has decided which college to attend, follow the instructions for depositing and enrolling by the applicable deadline. After your student has committed to their college of choice, it’s a nice courtesy to send a simple decline email to the other colleges that accepted you. This allows them to free up that spot for other deserving students. The email can be sent to the generic email address for each college’s admissions office or to a specific person in that office if you worked directly with an admissions counselor.

Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a student’s family member need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
• Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
• Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up a CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
