Aloha Lower School families,
For the past two plus weeks prior to the start of each school day, teachers in the Lower School division have been engaged in morning meetings to examine further ways in which we can address individual student needs from a strengths-based perspective. Where are their challenges? What unmet needs might there be? What strengths might be affirmed? What strategies can we develop to strengthen capacities, skills, and motivations? These can be challenging conversations to have (we are thankful for plenty of coffee!), but making this time and space to wonder and plan forward together as a team can help yield aligned strategies to support our keiki with care, grace, and appropriate structures in place. Our student body is
diverse, and we benefit from an experienced and masterful team of teachers who work hard to meet each child’s needs, whether that means a geometry extension, a standing desk, restorative friendship circles, or more time in a small group environment. There are so many ways we can meet and support each child’s growth and development. The experience of the students and our ability to lovingly support them to be lifelong learners are of utmost importance. When we uphold our mission with intentional care for each student as an individual, great things happen!
It is hard to believe that we will have one more week left in September. October promises to be an event-filled month as we celebrate the musical experiences of our Grades 3-5 students in their EarthDance program on Friday, October 7. Families of Grade 3-5 students are invited to attend this performance. Please refer to Ms. DiBartolo’s message on Seesaw for details on timing, attire, guest protocol, and the like. (Aside: we are grateful for Seesawʻs partnership and prompt response to ensure they are running more safely than ever before. We have been approved by the HPA IT department to continue use of the Seesaw for Schools app.)
Children in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade are also invited to the musical performance. As all students will be in Gates Performing Arts Center (GPAC) for this special event, we ask families to pick up their keiki from the GPAC roundabout at normal Lower School dismissal time (3:00 to 3:15 pm) on this day. We will have adults on hand to assist as usual. Starting Monday, October 17, and running until Wednesday, October 19, we invite all families to donate gently used and clean Halloween costumes during morning drop-off at the Village Campus roundabout. Children often do not reuse Halloween costumes, and we would love to give these items to others who decide to participate in upcoming Halloween festivities. Costumes should be on a hanger, labeled with the size, and inclusive of any accessories in a zip bag attached to the hanger. Likewise, this is a great time to donate any outgrown HPA PE uniforms or HPA gear. HPA clothing does not need to be on a hanger. All items should be clean and only gently used. Thank you for helping us save clothing from the landfill as we mālama ʻāina!
Lower School Parent Conferences are coming up on Thursday, October 20, and Friday, October 21. We will be sharing details on how to sign up for time slots with teachers in a separate email communication from the Village Campus Office. We look forward to having families on campus to meet with teachers and discuss their child’s learning. During these two days, we will have the used costumes and clothing sorted and organized for anyone to browse, in addition to a refreshment area, HPA Business Office info table, and our very popular HPA pop-up shop!
Our Lower School Student Council elections are getting underway, and that group will be sharing details on events such as Halloween festivities and Spirit Week (week of October 31), which our wonderful ʻOhana Association also helps us plan. I look forward to working with this new group of student leaders and hearing all of their thoughtful ideas.
Have a restful weekend, Lower School ʻohana!
Warmly,

Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
During Middle School assemblies throughout the year, we focus on HPA’s Core Values, Core Skills, and our Mālama Kaiāulu essential practices. We started the year with our Core Values, using each assembly to spotlight one of the values. Last week we took a look at our Core Value, Wonder, and HPA’s focus on being curious, appreciative, and content. We talked about how we are so blessed to live on this beautiful island, and it is important that we take the time to appreciate it and stay curious about how we can engage with it in meaningful ways. Grade 7 gave us a great start on the year with the Coastal Clean-up last week, and we’ll continue engaging with the island and our communities through experiential blocks, theme week, and Capstone projects, as well as within our curriculum. This week’s Fly on the Wall moment spotlights one of those community connections in our core academic program, as Grade 8 science classes welcomed Sergeant Dewey and Officer Cabanting from the Hawaiʻi Police Department to discuss Hawaiʻi Island’s tsunami preparedness. Students have been studying how earthquakes can trigger tsunamis, how ocean sensors work to help detect tsunamis, and how civil engineering can help mitigate their damage.
Sergeant Dewey and Officer Cabanting spoke about the earthquakes in Mexico on Monday and Tuesday and how the police department partners with National Guard, FEMA, and the Civil Defense departments to coordinate warnings and relief efforts when needed. The students are working on individual projects focused on things they can do to help the Hawaiʻi community with early warnings, preparedness, and relief efforts and were then able to ask Sergeant Dewey and Officer Cabanting questions to help them with their projects. Our 2022 Capture the Flag tournament is going strong, with Ms. Boswell’s and Ms. M’s Advisory groups claiming the 6th and 7th-grade titles, respectively. ……. Advisory came out on top of the 8th grade, and we are heading into the semi-finals to determine who will play for the championship on Monday, September 26. Everybody is getting excited for Middle School Dance and Lip Sync on Friday, September 30. Students have been busy in their advisories creating mash up Lip Syncs, complete withchoreography. We are all excited to see the results!
We have talked to students about how it is ok to just go to the dance with friends, and it is not important that everybody has a ‘date.’ They have been responding well, and it seems everybody is heading into the dance with a great attitude and excited to have fun with all their friends.
The other exciting news on campus is Theme Week, which is just around the corner; October 10 – 13. Advisors will be sharing more day-to-day details about the excursions in the coming weeks. A reminder that there is no school for Middle School students on Friday, October 14.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
Mahalo,

Glenn Chickering

Aloha e nā ʻohana o ka makani!
I would like to share a little about our awesome Student Council group and how proud I am of them. Long-lasting positive change is often seen as a result of beliefs and shifts that come from within, as opposed to change that is directed from above. Starting last year, I began to work with our Student Council to tackle something that is never an easy task in schools: the dress code. Thankfully, HPA utilized faculty task-force groups several years ago that were entrusted with diving into a topic that could benefit from the committed work of a team of individuals who had an interest in a particular topic. One of the focus areas was the dress code.
When I first had the opportunity to meet with our Student Council last year, their feedback was inspiring. They were clear about our need to remove anything that referenced gender or body image and the restriction of fashion options that have become a norm in modern-day attire. At the same time, the student leaders were adamant about upholding a sense of pride in one’s appearance and acknowledging the idea that HPA is an institution that emphasizes education and professionalism. During a later meeting with the Student Council, I shared one of the dress code proposals that was compiled by the faculty task force committee that paralleled the thoughts that were shared during our previous meetings. We rumbled with it a bit, edits were made, and the proposal continued on to a larger discussion with other members of HPA’s administration team.
When everyone arrived at a dress code that we were proud of, the next step was the rollout. The assembly on Monday was the date that was chosen by the Student Council because they wanted to have the opportunity to stand in front of the entire student body as a unified collective of student leaders to pitch the new dress code to everyone. The request that made us especially proud of the Student Council is when they asked if they could ask all of the adult faculty members to leave the GPAC theatre at the end of the assembly for a Q&A session. This was their chance to have a heart-to-heart honest conversation with all of the students without any adult members watching over them. That was brave, and I really think it had a positive impact on the student body.
In truth, students are mostly good about dressing appropriately, but there are always those who stretch an interpretation of something. When it comes to appearance, it is often assumed that students know what should and should not be worn. But how would they know if we do not teach them? Hopefully, day-student parents have a chance to see what their child is wearing as they leave the house. As for our residential students, that will require ongoing conversations. Overall, I am very happy with the way everything has been shared with the students and acknowledge that we will likely need to continue to tinker with things as we settle into it.
To learn more about the Upper School Student Dress Code, please review our policy and ask your child(ren) about their thoughts. This will be a good opportunity to get a grasp of their understanding and viewpoints about appropriate attire and what it looks like. They may have interesting insight about first impressions, suitable attire for various tasks, and otherwise. As always, mahalo for your continued support and aloha with the implementation of new initiatives. Change is not easy, and we don’t shy away from challenges.
Ke aloha nō,

Kaʻai Spencer

Upper School Photo Retake Day
Upper School photo retake day is scheduled for Wednesday, October 5, from 8:30 to 9:30 am in the Taylor Commons Conference Room, located in the dining room. This is for students, faculty, and staff who missed the previous two picture-taking days or for students who would like to exchange their photo packages. Residential Life
The year continues to progress, and our students are bustling with busy schedules and exciting programs! We also recently elected our Dormitory Representatives to Student Council for the year, and they are beginning work on the programs they want to build and events they want to plan.
The intramural Wiffle Ball League is nearing its close, and the students are getting excited for the upcoming shift to basketball. Our students continue to engage in a weekly curriculum that intersects with their lives in and out of the classroom; this past week, we took a look at good nutrition and how they can create balanced meals in our dining hall. This also gave students the opportunity to provide input into what has gone well this year in dining and what they would like to see change, which has already started to be implemented!
We are also delighted to have our Outdoor Program back in full swing after two years of limited available camping spots around the island due to the pandemic. This past weekend, students engaged in our second overnight camping trip this semester down at Kīholo Bay. Students got to set up tents under the stars along the beach, cook, swim, snorkel, stand-up paddle board, and enjoy a weekend away from technology.

Health & Wellness
The 2022-2023 cold and flu season kicked off early this year–in September! We are seeing an increase in both respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses on both our Village and Upper Campuses. While there’s no need to panic, we do ask for your continued partnership and diligence in monitoring your children for symptoms of illness and keeping them home when sick. One of the easiest ways to prevent the spread of germs is proper handwashing.

Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about.
Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
