Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong
Aloha Lower School families,
The Core Value theme of our assembly this week was the Pursuit of Excellence, and our students showed up in full force! From our Keiki Triathlon on Sunday to our EarthDance musical today, our Ka Makani community of students showed that the journey to excellence can yield inspiring results and opportunities for the community. Similarly, thoughtful preparations for Lower School Student Council elections were evident as each class tallied votes and decided on the representatives for their grade level. We are thrilled for this first trimester of Student Council leadership — they have already brought forth amazing ideas to support the Village Campus, as well as the wider Waimea community! Our first step was to map out our Spirit Week days and plan Halloween. They will be making announcements following next week’s meeting.
Speaking of Pursuit of Excellence, a huge congratulations to After School Director Ms. Mele DeMille, and Middle School PE Teacher, Ms. Lydia Blackburn, our very own Ironman competitors, for finishing yesterday’s race! They are role models for all of us, and we are so proud of them! Parent-teacher conferences are coming up Thursday, October 20, and Friday, October 21, and we look forward to welcoming families back to campus for these important meetings. Traditionally called “Family Weekend,” this is a time to gather with teachers, hear about the progress of your child(ren), ask questions, and collaborate on best strategies for support and growth. On these days, we will also have our Halloween costume swap and gently used HPA gear available for pickup. If you have clean and gently used items to contribute to our swap, please drop them off Monday, October 17, through Wednesday, October 19, at the Village Campus roundabout.
Finally, a note about walking safety at the Village Campus. We are thrilled there has been an increase in students walking to school. This is great for our planet and great for our bodies! Please be mindful for safety and always walk on the paths. When dropping them off at the front of the school, please help them enter through the front gate (in front of the library), and have your child walk through the breezeway. You may also enter on Kohala field and walk across the field (toward Ulumau Garden).
Have a wonderful weekend, Lower School ʻohana!
Warmly,

Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
It was so great to see so many of you at the Middle School Dance and Lip Sync last Friday. If you made it there, I hope you had as much fun as I did! The students were so full of energy for more than a week leading up to the dance, and it was great to see it all manifest in such a festive and supportive atmosphere, with students cheering on their classmates and then giving their all when it was their turn to shine. It sure felt like one big ʻohana in Hale ʻĪnana – even if it also felt like we were going to blow the roof off the place with all the energy inside.
The judges certainly had the toughest seats in the house, and all advisories deserve a big cheer for their efforts. In the end, Mr. Brown’s Advisory took 1st place honors, with Ms. Tal’s and Ms. Sturla’s Advisories tying for 2nd place, and Ms. Boswell’s Advisory taking a strong 3rd. As we shake off the restrictions of the pandemic and are able to bring people back together, it is a reminder of how important community is to a school and how parent partnership with the school fosters the best possible environment for our students’ to grow into their best selves. An extra special thank you to the ʻOhana Association and all the parents who helped us prepare, decorate, supply snacks and drinks, and clean up after the dance. We are all so lucky to be a part of this community.
And another big mahalo to the ʻOhana Association for getting the campus ready for Halloween festivities! Its getting spooky around here. We now turn our attention to the wider island community, with Theme Week set to begin on Monday, October 10. Students will be exploring the island’s ecosystems and cultural sites while also engaging in community service projects. We are thrilled for Grade 8 to be returning to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, where they’ll build on learning in both Hawaiian Studies and Science Courses while picking back up on a tradition of staying overnight in the park at the Kīlauea Military Camp Wednesday.
A reminder that there is no school on Friday, October 14, for Middle School students. Please reach out to your child’s advisor with any questions about Theme Week.
And finally, a GREAT BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Blackburn and Ms. DeMille, who both completed the Ironman race on Thursday. Good luck to all of our other community members running tomorrow.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
Mahalo,

Glenn Chickering
Middle School Principal
Capstone Update from K-8 Capstone Coordinator, Dagan Bernstein
Aloha mai kākou! The focus for this past month has been engaging with local organizations to learn more about the needs within our community. Through listening and observing, students gain empathy and curiosity for our community. These experiences are then applied
through their own exploration of identifying a community problem and solution that they will be designing in their capstone project. A huge mahalo goes to the following community partners for taking the time to present to students about their work: Uakoko Chong from Hui Mālama i ke Ala ʻŪlili, Miho Morinoue and Gerald Lucena from Donkey Mill Art Center, Kathleen Clark from Kahaluʻu Bay Education Center, Sarah Figueroa from HOPE Services, Kealiʻi Thoene from Terraformation, Ilene Grossman from Mālama Kai Foundation and South Kohala Coastal Partnership, James Hustace ‘03 from Waimea Community Association, Jaisy Jardine ‘94 from Jaisy Communications, and kapa master Roen Hufford.

Upper School
From the desk of your Poʻo Kumu (Division Principal), Kaʻai Spencer
Aloha e nā ʻohana o ka makani!
Kīkaha ka ʻiwa i nā pali. This phrase comes to mind because the Upper School has just finished Spirit Week, and students have been deeply immersed in the daily attire themes. If you have ever seen an ʻiwa bird, they soar, or kīkaha, very effortlessly and majestically in the upward drafts of cliffsides or pali. With their wings fully open, it is truly a sight to see, and it is easy to be caught staring as the ʻiwa commands your attention. This phrase is often said of someone who is attractive, dresses very nicely, or carries something about them that is attention-grabbing in the best of ways.
It is fun to see the things our students choose to wear during Spirit Week. The creativity was strong, and those who truly enjoy immersing themselves in entry-level cosplay had a chance to have fun with it. Dressing up is not for everyone, but everyone was encouraged to participate. Spirit week dress-up days also help to solidify the belief that students know the difference between acceptable and unacceptable attire choices. At Monday’s assembly, I shared a little story about my grandpa, or “gramps,” and how he often used the phrase “sharp” if he liked the way I was dressed, especially if we were headed somewhere to eat. He would say things like, “you’re looking sharp,” or “that’s a sharp outfit you got on,” or, my favorite, “I gotta look sharp when I’m headed to Vegas to win my millions,” (which, unfortunately, never panned out!). When I was going to college at UH Mānoa, I would often go to my grandparent’s house in Kapahulu to pick them up to go to dinners. If my attire choice fell short of gramps’ approval, he wouldn’t say anything, but I would be well aware of his disapproval. The next time, I would be sure to wear something “sharp.” It was less of a desire to dress nicely as it was my desire not to be a disappointment in his eyes.
This stuck with me over the years, especially because gramps is no longer with us, and I carry his name. I was lucky to have that relationship, and I know that not all of our students have someone that can have the same impact on them. In a school setting, it is tricky and a little scary to call someone out on a bad attire choice, but it needs to be done. I know that my views of looking sharp are influenced by my upbringing, which is different from everyone else. We do not always need to kīkaha like the ʻiwa bird, but we should know how when the time calls for it. Kīkaha ka ʻiwa i nā pali. Fly high.
He ʻupu aloha nui kēia i kuʻu tūtū kāne. Ka mea nāna i hōʻike mai i ke aloha pau ʻole.
Ke aloha nō,

Kaʻai Spencer

Residential Life
It has been a great pleasure to have gotten to see so many families this week! At the halfway point of the semester, students are always delighted to have a chance to spend some time with their families, spend a little time off campus, and of course, introduce you to their new friends from school! We hope that you enjoyed having time to meet some of their teachers, coaches, and dorm faculty and got to experience some of the positive atmosphere that makes HPA feel so much like a second home to many of our students! For those students whose families could not make it this week, don’t worry! We have a full schedule of activities and opportunities to get off campus, explore, and enjoy each other’s company throughout the coming weekend!
Looking ahead, the weekends coming up are jam-packed with fun traditions, new experiences, and the changing of the seasons! From the return of Lava Lounge, our Halloween Haunted Walk, the musical production of Cinderella, and Fall Ball, the best is yet to come this semester!

COVID-19 Policies & Information
While masks continue to be optional indoors and outdoors, there will be times when we will require everyone — students, families, guests, and employees — to wear masks. You will be notified in these instances. Everyone, regardless of age or vaccination status, must have a clean mask with them at all times should HPA officials determine they are necessary.
For a complete directory of all our health and safety protocols, please review our COVID-19 Policies & Information Resource Board on myHPA.
Health & Wellness
The 2022-2023 cold and flu season kicked off early this year–in September! We are seeing an increase in both respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses on both our Village and Upper Campuses. While there’s no need to panic, we do ask for your continued partnership and diligence in monitoring your children for symptoms of illness and keeping them home when sick. One of the easiest ways to prevent the spread of germs is proper handwashing.

Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging.
You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about.
Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
