Lower School’s Keiki Triathlon continues tradition of building character through challenge

Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong
Aloha Lower School families,
One of the many things I love and appreciate about education at HPA is our focus on a well-rounded experience for all our learners — academic, social-emotional, and physical. In a single day, a child might learn how to hold a conversation to resolve conflicts, create their own version of Monet’s Waterlilies, share the best strategies for solving multi-step equations, improve their freestyle stroke, and write strong endings to a personal narrative. Throughout all of these experiences, students are encouraged to live and be their best selves rooted in our Core Values and mālama kaiāulu.
This weekend, students in the Lower School get to participate in our Keiki Triathlon. The objective of the triathlon is to provide an opportunity to celebrate movement, learning, and our Core Values, which are an integral part of our physical education and health classes. Being able to share community support, champion for each other, and practice perseverance are some of the tenets of this beloved event — started and maintained by our dear Coach T (Betsy Tranquilli), Lower School Physical Education and Health Educator. We look forward to gathering together on Sunday to cheer on our students, support each other through the events, and congratulate them on their pursuit of excellence. We are especially excited for the children to receive the medals they each created for one another, an expression of care and support for everyone’s journey as an athlete and learner, and meant to take home as a keepsake for many years to come.
Thank you to all families who have responded to our call for Ulumau Garden volunteers. If any others are still interested in volunteering, you may reach out to our K-8 Garden Educator, Mrs. Lauren Prutow-McKenna (lprutow@hpa.edu). Starting next week and throughout the entire semester, we are happy to collect your used and cleaned glass jars for repurposing in our garden. Last year, we collected so many jars and containers to repurpose, and our young gardeners were thrilled to be able to collect cuttings and flowers to bring home!
The Village Campus maintains a lost and found located on the office lānai area. Please remind your child to check for and claim any lost items. Anything not claimed by Wednesday will be donated to local organizations in need.
Warmly,
Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
In this week’s assembly, we took a closer look at HPA’s Core Value of Pursuit of Excellence – Striving for the highest and best result. Our focus was on how our little, everyday actions are what lead us to excellence. How we treat ourselves. How we treat others. How we use our voice. How we engage with each small piece of work. When we take good care of our physical and mental health, intentionally say something kind rather than offensive, and do our best on each little task, we are building the habits that lead to excellence. All of our actions have ripple effects on the community, and each one of us makes a difference. When we choose to do the right thing, our whole community is stronger for it.
Speaking of our community working in harmony, we are excited for our Middle School dance and Lip Sync Mash-up competition tonight! Students have been practicing for a while now, and we are expecting a tight competition for first place! As a reminder, parents are welcome to come watch the Lip Sync portion of the dance.
The schedule is as follows:
• 6:30 pm: Start time for dance. Please drop off at our normal morning drop-off area.
• 7:30 pm: Break to prepare for Lip Sync.
• 7:45 pm: Lip Sync starts (parents are welcome for this portion of the dance).
• 8:30 pm: Dance ends, and students are dismissed to parents
A big congratulations to Ms. Kawakami’s Advisory, winners of the 2022 Middle School Capture the Flag Tournament! Malama Honu ʻOhana hosted the Middle School Eco-Club led by Ms. Kawakami at Mauna Lani on Wednesday, and our students were able to help weigh and measure turtles that will later be released on Turtle Independence day, July 4th, 2023. Take a look at this video Mr. Rice made documenting the experience.
Theme Week is just around the corner — Monday, October 10, through Thursday, October 13. Advisors will be reaching out with itineraries for the excursions. Unless otherwise noted, drop-off and pick-up times will be per normal at the Village Campus. A reminder that there is no school for Middle School students on Friday, October 14.
Be good to yourselves and be good to each other.
Mahalo,
Glenn Chickering
Middle School Principal
Capstone Update from K-8 Capstone Coordinator, Dagan Bernstein
Aloha mai kākou! The focus for this past month has been engaging with local organizations to learn more about the needs within our community. Through listening and observing, students gain empathy and curiosity for our community. These experiences are then applied
through their own exploration of identifying a community problem and solution that they will be designing in their capstone project. A huge mahalo goes to the following community partners for taking the time to present to students about their work: Uakoko Chong from Hui Mālama i ke Ala ʻŪlili, Miho Morinoue and Gerald Lucena from Donkey Mill Art Center, Kathleen Clark from Kahaluʻu Bay Education Center, Sarah Figueroa from HOPE Services, Kealiʻi Thoene from Terraformation, Ilene Grossman from Mālama Kai Foundation and South Kohala Coastal Partnership, James Hustace ‘03 from Waimea Community Association, Jaisy Jardine ‘94 from Jaisy Communications, and kapa master Roen Hufford.

Please remember that we will be outside as much as possible during lunch and recess, so a rain jacket for light rains and a pareo or small beach towel for picnicking will be great to have at school. Students should also bring a water bottle to school each day. Upper School
From the desk of your Poʻo Kumu (Division Principal), Kaʻai Spencer
Aloha e nā ʻohana o ka makani!
On Wednesday, September 28, HPA’s Upper School students participated in an all-school simulation called the World of 100. This simulation was aimed at building awareness in our students about the inequities that exist in certain places and countries as far as resources, healthcare, climate change, and other issues. To achieve this, the world metrics were boiled down to 100 people, which really helped to put things into perspective. All of the faculty and students participated in one of four locations. There were faculty facilitators who were largely from our Social Studies department, as well as student leaders who served as world delegates. It was a real collaboration and a massive learning opportunity and organizational undertaking. I would like to give a special shout-out to Adrienne White and Kiera Horgan, who were the primary initiators of the day.
After lunch, all of the Upper School students were separated into groups by advisories to partake in service activities both on our campus and out in the community. This was aimed at solidifying the exercise that was done in the morning and providing an actionable opportunity to make a positive impact. The group that I was with went to the St. James Thrift Store in Waimea. We spent most of our time organizing Christmas clothing donations, lights, and other donated materials. The energy of the group was so electric that we completed far more than what we were expected to accomplish. After working for much of the afternoon, our host struggled to find the words to show her gratitude while tears of appreciation ran down her face as she explained how much of her own work has just been made so much easier because of all the help that was given.
This is merely one example of the type of impact our students have brought to our community. There are many stories to share, just like the one I was a part of. I am hopeful that our students are aware of the impact and help they provided to many of our community partners. To learn more about the day, please ask your child(ren) to share their experiences with you. Ask them how they felt during the simulation. Were they part of a very privileged group? Or were they part of a group that did not have access to resources or simple comforts? Let them also share a bit about their service activity during the second half of the day. I am sure there will be a lot of good takeaways. One of the most fulfilling feelings is knowing that you made a difference for something outside of your usual circles. I hope everyone can hold on to that feeling.
Ke aloha nō,
Kaʻai Spencer

Residential Life
The year continues to progress, and our students are bustling with busy schedules and exciting programs! We also recently elected our Dormitory Representatives to Student Council for the year, and they are beginning work on the programs they want to build and events they want to plan.
The intramural Wiffle Ball League is nearing its close, and the students are getting excited for the upcoming shift to basketball. Our students continue to engage in a weekly curriculum that intersects with their lives in and out of the classroom; this past week, we took a look at good nutrition and how they can create balanced meals in our dining hall. This also gave students the opportunity to provide input into what has gone well this year in dining and what they would like to see change, which has already started to be implemented!
We are also delighted to have our Outdoor Program back in full swing after two years of limited available camping spots around the island due to the pandemic. This past weekend, students engaged in our second overnight camping trip this semester down at Kīholo Bay. Students got to set up tents under the stars along the beach, cook, swim, snorkel, stand-up paddle board, and enjoy a weekend away from technology.

You will be notified in these instances. Everyone, regardless of age or vaccination status, must have a clean mask with them at all times should HPA officials determine they are necessary.
For a complete directory of all our health and safety protocols, please review our COVID-19 Policies & Information Resource Board on myHPA.
Health & Wellness
The 2022-2023 cold and flu season kicked off early this year–in September! We are seeing an increase in both respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses on both our Village and Upper Campuses. While there’s no need to panic, we do ask for your continued partnership and diligence in monitoring your children for symptoms of illness and keeping them home when sick. One of the easiest ways to prevent the spread of germs is proper handwashing.
Hawaii Poison Control Center has trained nurses, pharmacists, and toxicologists available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They offer free advice, and it is 100 % confidential. Their telephone number should be on everyone’s cell phone: 1-800-222-1222.

Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging.
You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about.
Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
