What's Happening at HPA This Week?

Message from the Head of School

Aloha HPA ʻohana,

This week has been a great reminder of the power of this place that we are blessed to call home – Hawaiʻi Island. Waking up this past week to the absolute magnificence of Mauna Loa and her rage and glowing beauty has been humbling, grounding, and overwhelming in the most important senses. We live on a breathtaking, evolving island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. It is easy to get routine with our days and schedules and to-dos, and we forget to look up to feel where we are, why we are here, and our connections within this delicate and deep ecosystem; within this culture and history and natural landscape.

I encourage all of us to remember to look up this month. To pause and consider where we are and to embrace the power of taking good intentional care. It shouldn’t require a volcanic eruption to make us take a beat, but it helps. I know it did for me. Our young people live with these surrounding forces and are raised innately connected to the land and elements around them – this is a gift. One most children do not get. It is our hope that with this, they are then instilled with the love of this place and the lands, so that they grow to give their gifts to her in return; from wherever they are in the world.

At HPA we think about Sustainability through many lenses: curricular, operations, energy resources, expenditures, student life, community partnerships, capital opportunities, and on and on and here and there. However, it is important to look up from the day to day planning and projects, and consider how all of those smaller efforts contribute to the good of something greater than ourselves and our spaces. We are short term stewards of all that surrounds us and are implored to do right by the land that we watch and work on each day.

Learning is an active process. Often our classroom does not have walls. As we look into the history of Mauna Loa’s eruption activity and lava flows to then predict our current flow, we dig into research that can inform us and give us a sense of calm and understanding. With this, we are forced to also honor that this new flow may well create its own path, which will force new understanding and new ideas.

Take some time to watch Mauna Loa and be moved. Wonder. Be curious. Spend time in the ocean and through the waterways that feed the hills. Walk and breathe in the mists and the forests – and envision new growth and restorations.

We are part of a school and extended community who work to share a respect and charitable spirit for this place and its future. We are learners and should continue to look up. Today is a new day and tomorrow is a shared horizon of possibilities and reciprocity. I am happy to be here, at this moment, with all of you.

Gratefully,

Fred Wawner

School Bulletins for the Week of 12/2/22

Lower School

Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.

From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong

Aloha Lower School families,

My favorite way to start a week after a holiday break is as an entire Lower School, in a community to learn, celebrate, and connect with one another. This week held much excitement as Monday was also Lā Kūʻokoʻa, also known as Hawaiian Independence Day. Kumu Kūwalu shared with us about the significance of this day, and we made connections to mālama kaiāulu and the importance of sharing this story. Each class carried on this discussion in its own way, and we hope to build out the learning and understanding of Lā Kūʻokoʻa with each school year. (To learn more about Lā Kūʻokoʻa and the events that led to Hawaiʻi achieving international recognition, please visit awaiaulu.org to register for free information, including the ability to browse primary resources, watch videos, and read informational articles.)

Our assembly continued with gratitude from the Annunciation Food Pantry, who sent us a lovely note detailing their thanks and the impact made from our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Because of our community’s generosity, the pantry was able to distribute 210-holiday bags bursting with chicken, rice, tuna, mashed potatoes, canned veggies and fruits, fresh carrots, lettuce, eggs, vegetable assortments from the HPA gardens, as well as beef donated from Big Island Beef Producers, and so much more. Mahalo to our Student Council leaders for initiating this food drive for the Annunciation Food Pantry and to all of our generous families for contributing to this wonderful effort!

nother favorite of mine during assemblies is our mindful moment. This week, we practiced “heartfulness,” which is a strategy for thinking of a loved one – a friend, sibling, grandparent, teacher, or parent, perhaps – and filling up our hearts with good feelings and warm wishes to send out from our hearts to theirs. Taking a moment to fill our hearts with love and good wishes for others is a wonderful way to practice gratitude and thinking kind thoughts. Children are encouraged to practice “heartfulness” and be reminded of the wonderful people for whom we are thankful! We then closed our assembly with three “student spotlights,” a lovely song from Finnegan L., a beautiful remix of old favorites on the piano by Suri S., and a holiday routine from our After School Cheer team, represented by students in K-4th grade, as well as Middle Schoolers Lexi C., and Gianna D. Mahalo for sharing with our Lower School community!

In other news, our Village Campus 4th-8th Grade HPA Robotics team has qualified for and is traveling to the First Lego League Challenge State Tournament on December 3, 2022, at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall in Oʻahu! The team worked together since August to compete in the district tournament. The team had two major tasks: students designed, built, and coded a robot and created an innovative project where students researched, designed, prototyped, and presented about reducing ecological footprints in commercial jets. Competing in the district’s tournament earned them a seat in the State tournament! Go, HPA Kamakani Robotics!

Have a wonderful weekend, Lower School ʻohana. I hope to see some of you at the holiday parade in town this weekend!

Warmly,

Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School

Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.

From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering

Aloha Middle School families,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend filled with gratitude. After traveling for the holiday, I was reminded how grateful I am to be able to return home to such a beautiful, dynamic island. We are certainly keeping a close eye on the developments with Mauna Loa’s eruption, and with everybody safe, it is also a good reminder to lean into our core value of Wonder and marvel at the beauty, power, and mystery of this island and its culture. We are certainly lucky to be here and witness such grandeur.

Sticking with the subject of gratitude, one of our students had a brilliant idea after our last assembly. In that assembly, we shared notes from students, faculty, and staff, sharing things and people that they were grateful for. One student (who wishes to remain anonymous) noted that it is important for us to lean into gratitude all year long and had the idea of creating a Gratitude Box that we can drop notes into whenever we are feeling grateful for somebody or something. We can then share a few of these in the weekly assemblies, reminding us all to take time to be grateful and to express our gratitude.
We hope that you had a chance to catch our Middle School Performing Arts Showcase this afternoon. Another big thank you to all the student performers and Ms. Tali, Ms. Di Botolo, and everybody who supported in many ways for all their hard work to make this showcase happen!

I can’t stop – A big thank you to Ms. Monello, who has been leading our Village Campus 4th-8th Grade HPA Robotics team. They will be traveling to the First Lego League Challenge State Tournament on December 3, 2022, at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall in Oʻahu. Go HPA Kamakani Robotics!

A huge mahalo goes out to Kumu Kūwalu for our Middle School Makahiki Games just before the Thanksgiving break. We had a great collaboration with some of our HPA seniors and students from Kanu O Ka ʻAina Charter School, who came down to host the games for our students. A big Mahalo to them, as well! In return, we shared with them our Makahiki Baskets that were generously put together by all of our Middle School families.

And while I’m on a roll, mahalo to Ms. Tarnas, who is currently representing the Village Campus at the annual People of Color Conference presented by the National Association of Independent Schools. She is joining faculty and students from the Upper Campus as they attend workshops and collaborate with educators and students from around the country to build robust Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging programs in schools. We look forward to the learning they bring back to share with our community as we advance our work in DEIB.

And a jump back to Ms. Monello for another mahalo for compiling this collection of resources for parents to support this work from home:  Parenting in the Digital Age: Resources for Parents.

On Monday, we will be sharing a link to a folder of photos that Ms. Monello took at the photo booth during the Lip Sync Dance. We have asked students not to post any of the photos on social media, as all have multiple students in them. There are a lot of fun photos that will make great framers and desktop savers on computers, but please remind them that we are not posting them to social media.

I hope you have a great weekend! Thanks for your support!

Mahalo,

Glenn Chickering

Upper School

Each week, Upper School Poʻo Kumu Kaʻai Spencer provides valuable insight about campus culture while sharing updates with 9-12 students and parents on academics, athletics, and arts, and offering his insight on what day and residential families can expect throughout the semester.

From the desk of your Poʻo Kumu (Division Principal), Kaʻai Spencer

Aloha e nā ʻohana o ka makani!

I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break as well as a joyous celebration on Monday’s Lā Kūʻokoʻa, Hawaiian Independence Day. If you have not yet gotten a chance to hear about the day’s festivities, please ask your child about what they learned, along with their most memorable activity of the day. It was a fun-filled day, and it was amazing to see all of the students enjoying themselves in a truly experiential learning environment that is rooted in academia and Hawaiian practices.

Now that we have returned from the short break, we are on the home stretch to semester exams. It is important for students to manage their time wisely and remain as present as possible. This is also a common time for students to request to leave early, which is tough to manage for both the students and the teachers. I am including a section of the Upper School Student-Parent Handbook, which covers final exams and exam scheduling. Mahalo for assisting us in supporting student learning and success by scheduling any trips after the completion of all exams and the end of the fall semester.

Exams (Page 10 of student handbook)
Semester exams are given at the end of each semester and account for 20 percent of the
semester grade. Students must have permission from the Principal to reschedule any exam they are unable to take at the scheduled time. Students may reschedule exams only in the event of a medical emergency. A doctor’s note must accompany the request to reschedule. It is the family’s responsibility to schedule travel following the last school commitment each semester. No exam may be taken early or late unless there is a school-related function that is the cause of a scheduling conflict.

Ke aloha nō,

Kaʻai Spencer

If there are any errors on the record, students must contact the attendance office at attendance@hpa.edu.

Class Absences — Leave Request Form

If an Upper School student is going to be missing more than one day of classes for a non-medical reason, that student must pick up a Leave Request Form from the Student Life Office and have their teachers sign the form acknowledging their extended absence. If you have not done so already, please share your child’s flight information with travel@hpa.edu as soon as possible. All airline itineraries were due on Thursday, December 1, 2022. If your child will either not be traveling over the break or spending time with friends before departure, they only need to submit an Orah Leave Request for the break, which is due by Monday, December 5, 2022. please refer to our Travel Dates which you can find on the myHPA calendar and in the email titled HPA Travel Dates 2022-2023, sent on October 26, 2022.

HPA will offer transportation to the Kona International Airport beginning at 3 pm on Thursday through noon on Saturday. Flight plans that dictate leaving campus either before 3 pm on Thursday or afternoon on Saturday will be arranged at the family’s expense.

Return in January

Spring Semester will begin on Monday, January 9, 2022. Our dormitories will be open as of Saturday, January 7, 2022, and boarding students are expected to arrive throughout the weekend of January 7 and 8. HPA will offer transportation for students arriving on either of those days.

Please note that we will require all residential students to submit a negative result for a COVID-19 test taken within 24 hours of their return to campus. If they do not submit one prior to arrival, they will have to stay in quarantine housing until we can have them tested here. At home, Rapid Antigen tests are acceptable, and we have plenty available for your student to take with them for the break. Please remind your child to collect a test kit from the infirmary before departing campus.

Additionally, we would like to remind everyone that students may not sign out to their own care, either in a hotel, Airbnb, or other accommodation. Students must sign out to the care of a present, supervising adult, which HPA defines as someone who is 25 years of age or older.

Safety Protocols

Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.

Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.

At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.

If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.

Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu

CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.

Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.

All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
