Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.

Aloha Lower School families!
As we reach the end of another incredible school year, we reflect with gratitude on the growth, discovery, and countless memorable moments we’ve experienced together. The final days of school are always rich with emotion as we look back on all that the children have accomplished over the past ten months.
Our last day of school was once again marked by our beloved Lower School Gratitude Assembly. Fifth graders honored the faculty and staff who have shaped their Lower School learning journeys with handmade cards and a gift of song. Watching our oldest Lower School students model their heartfelt gratitude was a powerful milestone and a meaningful teaching and learning moment for the entire division. We are proud of our rising 6th graders, who led our final assembly of the 2024–2025 school year with poise and purpose, including guiding our oli and mindfulness practice. We wish them great success as they continue their journey into Middle School.
As the Village Campus settles into a different rhythm, our dedicated teachers are hard at work together — writing student reports and engaging in professional development to deepen their craft. We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to reflection, growth, and excellence in teaching. Later this week, we will share information about when Lower School reports will be available on myHPA. These reports provide insight into your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for continued growth. We encourage you to review them together as a family — to celebrate accomplishments and begin setting goals for the year ahead.
As we head into summer, we know that technology use will naturally increase for many students. Our K–8 EdTech Specialist, Mellon Monello, has curated a helpful set of resources for safe and balanced tech use for families. We encourage you to explore them as part of your summer planning.
We also want to share a story that illustrates how awareness and learning can truly make a difference. During one of our final assemblies, students learned about unexploded ordnance (UXO) and how to stay safe should they encounter one. One of our very own third graders, Emma S., recognized something she had seen before that resembled one of the images shown. Upon returning home, Emma told her mom, who took her back to the area — and it turned out to be a real UXO. We are so proud of Emma — for her attentiveness, initiative, and quick action. Read the full story here!
As we say aloha to this school year, we also share some Lower School transitions. Mrs. Carolyn White has officially retired after 25 years of devoted service at the Village Campus, and Mrs. Suzanne Robinson is moving off-island for new adventures. We are grateful to both for the gifts they have shared with our students and community. Our hiring committees remain thoughtfully engaged in the process of appointing a new 2nd-grade teacher, and we look forward to sharing updates with you once confirmations are made.
Please accept my warmest wishes to you and your ʻohana for a joyful and restful summer. May this season bring opportunities to recharge, explore, and make lasting memories with your children. We look forward to welcoming you back in the fall, ready for another year of learning, growth, and connection.
Mahalo nui loa for your continued partnership. It is a true honor to work alongside you in support of your wonderful children.
Me ke aloha pumehana,

Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Michael Cservenak pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Michael Cservenak
Aloha Middle School families,
The 2024–25 school year came to a beautiful close, marked by meaningful moments of pilina (connection) within our school community. It was truly an honor to witness the culminating work of Kumu Kūwalu and the 8th-grade team as our students performed their transition hula and received recognition for embodying our Core Values. Mr. Brown closed the ceremony with a heartfelt reflection on the years of learning, adventure, and growth our students have experienced at the Village Campus — sending them forward with purpose and positivity.
As we move into summer, I’m energized by the work ahead with our faculty to thoughtfully prepare for the 2025–26 school year. One major area of focus is a clear and intentional shift toward becoming a fully phone-free school. While HPA Middle School has largely operated as a phone-free environment during the day, we are now working toward implementing a formal system that will ensure consistency, clarity, and positive outcomes for all students.
This shift is grounded in both experience and research. Over the past month, our faculty has engaged in rich dialogue, studied best practices from other schools, and reviewed a growing body of evidence. One highly recommended resource is Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation, which outlines compelling research supporting the benefits of phone-free learning environments — particularly for middle school-aged students. Feedback from families I’ve spoken with so far has been overwhelmingly supportive, and we’ll be sharing full implementation details over the summer. If you’d like to share your thoughts or have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
As we wrap up the year, I’m thrilled to highlight a powerful, interdisciplinary experiential project led by Science teacher Alice Mitchell, EdTech Specialist Mellon Monello, and Library Specialist, Kristin Tarnas. In alignment with 7th-grade Next Gen Science Standards, students investigated the challenges facing reef systems and fish populations in the Hawaiian Archipelago. Their learning journey included a field experience at the Mega Lab in Hilo, followed by four weeks of interviews with global experts. Their final product? The “Saltwater Stories Podcast Series” — a series of student-created podcasts that reflect deep research, critical thinking, and authentic student voice. My words can’t quite do it justice—please take the time to explore their incredible work here: HPA Middle School Saltwater Stories Podcast Series
This work demonstrates our clear focus on place-based, project experiences for our students that use our Mālama Kaiāulu framework as the lens for authentic learning and exploration.
Mahalo for your partnership throughout this school year. I look forward to staying connected and building an even stronger year ahead. There is still room in HPA’s Summer Academies – sign up here.
Aloha always,

Michael Cservenak

Aloha Upper School families,
We are extremely proud of all of the accomplishments of our Class of 2025.
- Class of 2025 End-of-Year Celebration Photo Gallery
- Class of 2025 End-of-Year Celebration YouTube Video Playlist
- Class of 2025 Senior Awards
- Class of 2025 Haʻina Senior Capstone Showcase & Presentations
The celebration of the Class of 2025 was spectacular, and we appreciate all who supported the events. A special thanks to Ms. Pualani Lincoln Maielua, Ms. Julie Camarillo, and Mr. Robert Burchell for their leadership with the students and their speeches. Additionally, thanks to Kumu Kūwalu and Mario Flores for their work with the seniors with song and hula. Speeches by student vice-president Zane Van Natta at Baccalaureate and president Lily Hodges during Commencement were inspiring and wonderful reflections.
Faculty were honored during the week, with Ms. Laura Swartz-Burt receiving the (student-nominated) Ellbogen teaching award, and Ms. Robyn Scarth receiving the (faculty-nominated) Dillingham teaching award. Additionally, Ms. Adrienne White was recognized for her outstanding devotion to watching student performances, whether on stage or on any playing field, court, or pool, with the first inaugural “Nicholas Spirit” award. Another faculty member who has gone above and beyond recently was Dr. Johanna Anton, who went to the IPES World Fair in Columbus, Ohio, with junior Nikki Littlefield. Nikki won second place in her division — an outstanding accomplishment. Also, Ms. Robyn Brewer’s Robotics team qualified for the MATE ROV World Championships in Alpena, Michigan, later in June. We wish them the best of luck.
I thank the entire faculty for their consistent care for advancing the development of our students. Additionally, thanks to all students for keeping learning a two-way street and moving the school forward with their knowledge and wisdom.
Thanks to the ʻOhana Association for supporting the Class of 2025 with a successful Grad Night following Commencement. The ability for our graduates to connect one final time is truly memorable for all.
Lastly, to all students moving on and not returning to HPA in August, we wish you the very best and encourage you to stay in touch with the school and your friends. For all who are returning in the fall, enjoy your summer, and we look forward to your return.
Mahalo,

Mark Noetzel

Complete Self-Input and Parent/Guardian-Input Forms
Juniors and their Parents/Guardians are requested to complete these two forms by the end of the Spring Semester. These input forms are used by our college counselors to assist in writing the counselor letter for college applications in the senior year. The specific details and insights shared in these input forms are always very helpful.
Driver Education
Students who are 15½ through 17 years old must meet stringent requirements to obtain a driver’s license in the state of Hawaiʻi. One of the major requirements is completing a state-certified driver education course and road time with both a certified driving instructor and parents before getting a license.
This course is offered to students with a valid (current) Hawaiʻi learner permit. The course includes 6 hours of “behind-the-wheel” practice driving sessions with the instructor, to be scheduled outside of class time. There is a mandatory Parent & Student Orientation on Saturday before the class begins, June 1, 9:00 to 10:30 am. 50 hours of driving time with a parent/guardian (including 10 hours of night driving) will be required before a minor (under 18) may apply for a Hawaiʻi Driver’s License. After 50 hours, the parent/guardian must submit a notarized statement to the teacher to receive the final certificate for this course. Certificates cannot be issued until 6 weeks after the beginning of the course, July 15.
Dates: June 2-13
Ages: 15 1/2 – 17
Times: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm
Cost: $550

Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
