What's Happening at HPA This Week?

Message from the Head of School

Aloha HPA ʻohana,

Fasten your seatbelts. Here we go — opening days and week one is in the books! It’s been an awesome week!

Returning home from a few weeks of summer family check-ins and plenty of flight miles logged, there was a brief moment during one pre-flight process that made me think of our Opening Days, and the many steps of important preparation and service necessary to ensure a successful flight. Yep, here comes the flight metaphor.

I write to you this morning while taking in picture-perfect Waimea — bright blue skies stretching endlessly above the green rolling hills. Ideal runway conditions for a smooth takeoff.

As our students stepped onto campus over the last few days, they were greeted like passengers at the gate, each carrying their own stories, hopes, and goals for the journey ahead. Our Ka Makani crew — faculty and staff in a sea of red shirts — welcomed everyone with open arms, ready to guide, serve, and ensure a safe and joyful trip. While boarding the plane may be just the beginning, it sets the tone for the whole journey.

Like any flight prior to take-off, a proper review of safety protocols is pertinent. We have spent time during our Opening Days sessions and Intake Conferences highlighting our mission, values, school protocols and any emergency plans that might need review. Our Ka Makani “safety card” highlights our Core Values: Respect, Integrity, Pursuit of Excellence, and Wonder. They serve as our seat belts and oxygen masks, keeping us grounded and aligned when unexpected turbulence comes our way. Every member of our crew knows their kuleana, and every student, family, and staff member is part of this shared responsibility.

In these first weeks, we will be gathering speed as our students find their schedules and routines, make new friends, and adjust to new altitudes of learning and expectations. It is not always smooth — we anticipate a few bumps, but this is part of the journey, and we are ready for it!

It will take a little more time to reach a smooth cruising altitude. But when we do, the view will be breathtaking: collaborative classrooms humming with curiosity, teams and ensembles moving in perfect rhythm, and a community that knows both how to work hard and embrace the process. Along the way, we’ll share meals, laughter, accomplishments, and moments of quiet wonder.

To our exceptional professional crew — mahalo for the countless hours you’ve spent readying this “aircraft” for takeoff. Your dedication ensures that every passenger onboard begins the year with clarity and excitement for the adventure ahead. And to our families — thank you for choosing to fly with HPA. Your presence makes our ʻohana better, stronger, and more vibrant.

As your captain, I want to say: We know you have a choice of schools, and we thank you for choosing HPA. Now, fasten your seat belts, stow your carry-ons (and any possible doubts), and sit back, relax, and enjoy — we are on our way.

Welcome aboard!

P.S.: POG or water?

Gratefully,

Fred Wawner

Lower School

Each week, K–5 families receive updates highlighting joyful moments, meaningful lessons, and a glimpse into what students and parents can look forward to in the weeks ahead.

This week's news & notes

Aloha Lower School ‘Ohana!

What a beautiful three days of school it has been! Our first days together have been filled with moments of connection—students greeting one another with excitement, teachers fostering warm and welcoming classrooms, and our Village Campus coming alive with the joy of learning. We are especially delighted to welcome new friends into the Lower School ‘ohana, joining us on this journey of learning and growing. As we begin to settle into our routines, we want to take a moment to share important announcements, offer a few reminders, and express our heartfelt gratitude for your partnership. Please check this special space each week for Lower School news, celebrations, and perhaps even a few musings along the way!

Some announcements and reminders as we enter these first weeks of school:

  • Rain jackets/warm layers: All students need to bring both a rain jacket and a warm layer to school each day to stay comfortable in our always beautiful, but at times, blustery Waimea weather. Our climate ranges from sunny to rainy to windy, or a mix of all three, in a matter of moments. Unless the weather is very dangerous, we are outside rain or shine.
  • Lower School Personal Phone & Device Policy: a reminder that all mobile devices and smartwatches are prohibited during the school day.
  • Lunch: This year, our 3rd-5th-grade classes will once again enjoy our lunch outdoors, weather permitting. Our Kindergarten-2nd graders will eat in the dining hall. In the spring, our 1st and 2nd-graders will join us outdoors once the teachers have supported them well with the routines and rhythms of dining.
  • Morning Drop-off: Our morning drop-off is 7:40-8 am. The first class begins promptly at 8 am. Students in 1st-5th grade should head to classrooms on their own, while kindergarten families are welcome to choose to accompany our youngest learners until Friday, August 22. Thank you for supporting our students to begin their school day with a healthy breakfast and a calm morning routine.
  • After School Program begins: The first term of our After School program begins this coming Monday, August 18. (We continue to offer complimentary care for all students on Early Dismissal Wednesdays, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm.)
  • Lower School Enrichment Day: Friday, August 29
Lower School Enrichment Day is a day of connection, a Wå Pilina for our keiki in Kindergarten through 5th grade. This is a regular school day, but full of interdisciplinary learning led by our specialist teachers. More information on this day will be shared. For now, you can please plan to send your child to school as usual, in their HPA red shirts.
  • Labor Day: no school on Monday, September 1
  • School Picture Day: Wednesday, September 3
  • Faculty Work Day: There will be no classes on our K-8 Faculty Work Day, Friday, September 19

Today and moving forward, you will see important dates (like some of the above) briefly noted in the bulleted list below, under the heading “Coming Up.” Please reach out to me, your grade level teachers, or the VC office with any questions or wonderings you may have (villagecampusoffice@hpa.edu). Your classroom newsletters will continue to be helpful news sources, as well as myHPA.

These first days back to school can be tiring for our children as they readjust (or newly adjust!) to their routines. Be gentle with them (and yourselves!) and consider having a snack and/or downtime ready when they get home to help ease them into the new routines of the school year.

Mahalo for choosing HPA as the school to educate your children. We are grateful for the trust you place in us and appreciate your continued support. We look forward to collaborating with you this academic year, and creating many memorable learning experiences together, grounded in our core values of Respect, Integrity, Wonder, and Pursuit of Excellence, alongside our Mālama Kaiāulu compass petals of Haʻina, Kuleana, Pilina, and Lōkahi.

Middle School

Each week, 6–8 families receive updates reflecting on recent activities and accomplishments, along with a preview of what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.

This week's news & notes

Aloha Middle School families,

Thank you for helping us start the school year on such a positive note. In our first days together, we’ve welcomed new faces, celebrated cherished traditions, and quickly settled into strong academic routines.

Our Middle School theme for the year, “ʻAʻohe Hana Nui Ke Alu ʻIa”—translated as “No task is too big when done together by all”—or “Many Hands Make Light Work” was embraced from the very first day in our welcome assembly. It’s a mindset that reflects the heart of our Mālama Kaiāulu framework, and I’ve already seen it in action among our faculty and students.

The launch of our Phone-Free Yondr Pouch system on the Village Campus was a success. This shift is rooted in research, including Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation, which notes that “removing phones from the school day gives students the space to focus, build friendships, and engage more deeply with learning.” We are proud to offer our students this kind of distraction-free environment. As a point of clarification, this policy does include smart watches.

We also introduced an exciting new initiative: All Middle School Choir. About every other Friday, our entire student body will come together to sing under the direction of Ms. DiBartolo, reconnecting with the joy and benefits of vocalizing as a group. Research from the National Association for Music Education shows that students who participate in school music programs are more likely to excel academically and develop stronger social-emotional skills. This choir is designed to be inclusive of all students—from those who love to sing to those who may never have thought of themselves as singers. In the spirit of Pilina (connection) and Lōkahi (harmony), we look forward to the energy and unity this will bring to our campus.

Mahalo for your continued partnership as we embark on another year of meaningful learning, shared experiences, and strong community.

Upper School

Each week, our Upper School leadership team provides valuable insight about campus culture while sharing updates with 9-12 students and parents on academics, athletics, and arts, and what day and residential families can expect throughout the semester.

Aloha Upper School families,

E komo mai to the 2025-2026 school year! The HPA Upper Campus is alive again with new and returning students. It is a great place to be!

As we begin this new school year, our theme of Pilina (connection) will be guiding our work this year. Pilina reminds us that relationships are at the heart of learning. On our first day, our teacher set the tone with activities that centered on getting to know one another, creating a foundation of trust and belonging. The energy generated that day was alive with laughter, curiosity, and the joy of reconnecting. These first moments matter, as they are the starting point for the bonds that will support our students’ growth throughout the year. Strong connection is an essential ingredient for our students to think critically, be creative, collaborate, and communicate effectively.

We initiate every student and family to lean into pilina this year. Whether it is greeting a new classmate, lending a hand in a garden, collaborating on a project, or sharing traditions, each act of connection strengthens the winds that carry us forward as Ka Makani. Together, let’s nurture a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and inspired to contribute, because when we invest in one another, we make HPA a place to learn like nowhere else.

For those families who were able to join us on campus for Opening Days and Back-to-School Bash, thank you for being here to celebrate with us. We appreciate your partnership in the education of your child(ren).  Here is to a year of strong connections, joyful learning, and caring for our community – together!

Mark Noetzel
Assistant Head of School for Upper School

Below you will find additional information that might be helpful coming up in the next couple of weeks:

Add/Drop Period – Class Changes
The add/drop period for class changes runs through Friday, August 29. All add/drop requests will need to be made using the Add/Drop Form, which may be picked up from the Academic Office. You will need to have the form filled out before the request will be processed. Students are welcome to stop by the office and request schedule changes during their free periods. Please understand that only course change requests will be honored, not changes in class periods or teachers.

School photos
Upper School photo day will be Wednesday, August 20, from 1-3 pm in Dyer Memorial Library. All students must take a photo and will receive a school ID card as a result. The ID is necessary to enter some events.

Purchasing a photo package is not required; however, all students must have their photos taken for their student ID/KaMakaniCash card and the yearbook.

Students cannot charge their KaMakaniCash account to pay for a photo package this year. Students can order online through the photographer’s website (link below)  by completing this photo order form before Tuesday, August 19. Cash or check payments will be accepted on August 20. Please proceed to this site to learn more.

Dress Code for Photos
All students must adhere to the HPA dress code for their photos. Props, hats, and sunglasses will not be allowed in your official school photo.

If a student cannot take their picture on August 20, we have not yet scheduled a retake day, but we will send out that information once we have a date.

Cell Phone Usage
Please remind your child(ren) about the Upper School policy regarding phones.  Faculty will remind students of this policy and its purpose. Additionally, when a student is excused to leave a class temporarily, their phone should remain inactive.

Parents, thank you for reinforcing our policy and for not texting or calling your child during classes, meetings, or other school activities. To help you communicate with your child during the academic day, you can phone the Student Life Office (808-881-4086) or the Academic Office (808-881-4002) to have a message delivered to your child.

Phones and Electronic Devices
Subject to such modifications as might be deemed best by the administration, students may not use their mobile devices in academic spaces, especially during academic courses and other organized meeting times. Devices should be kept in a book bag or a locker and should be silenced. Teachers may request that all devices be placed in a central location, and if this request is made, students must comply or risk consequences. The use of such devices as part of an instructional activity is, of course, appropriate, and as instructed by the teacher. The device should be returned to a student’s bag or a location designated by the teacher at the end of such an activity.

Day Student Lockers
Academic lockers are available for day students only. Sophomore, junior, and senior day students should complete this Locker Request Form using their HPA.edu school email. Freshmen students will be assigned lockers through their myHPA student account under the contact card tab. This will be available beginning Tuesday, August 12. Students can find their locker numbers and combinations in their myHPA student accounts under Student profile → Contact Card → General information or by following these instructions.

Locker Locations

  • Locker numbers 1-132 & 360-372: Business Office lānai
  • Locker numbers 500-532: Math building
  • Locker number 200-229: Science building 41 & 42

Lockers are the responsibility of the student. At the end of the year, all lockers must be cleaned out and locks returned to the Academic Office by Tuesday, May 19, 2026. All items left in the lockers will be donated.  Students who do not return their locks or clean out their lockers will be charged a $15 fee to their KaMakaniCash student account.

Class retreats
Class retreats are designed for each class, with a specific activity that allows the class to bond and make lifelong friendships. This year, class retreats will occur on Friday, August 22, 2025. As we near the date, more information will be sent out, including activity specifics for each class, instructions on what to bring, and check-in procedures.

Residential Life

After a successful orientation weekend, our boarding students are now fully immersed in school life here at HPA! As we transition from the structured programming of their first weekend on campus to the more open format of our typical school day weekend, we want to encourage all of our students (and their parents!) to get involved in the opportunities at school, and to embrace having some downtime on weekends to rest and recharge.

There will be lots of on- and off-campus activities throughout the weekend for them to participate in, and also open time for them to connect with their friends in their own ways. The last week has helped immensely with integrating our newest members into our community, and we look forward to a strong year ahead!

The completion of Magnus Health forms is vital in providing your student(s) with the support and safety they need. If you have any issues logging in, reach out to infirmary@hpa.edu for assistance as soon as possible so we can help.

We are asking that everyone routinely assess themselves for symptoms of illness — which can be mild, so please pay close attention. If you or your child(ren) develop any symptoms of illness, contact your healthcare provider and HPA Health Services at vcinfirmary@hpa.edu (Village Campus) or infirmary@hpa.edu (Upper Campus). Please keep your child(ren) home until they are no longer sick.

  • Anything out of the ordinary: email Dan Wilkinson, HPA Security Supervisor at dwilkinson@hpa.edu

CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message), and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.

Safe2SpeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.

All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
