What's Happening at HPA This Week?

Message from the Head of School

Aloha HPA ʻohana,

Think back. Would your younger, school-aged self rather: a) tour your parents around your school to meet your teachers, b) talk to an intervention specialist about the risks of addiction, or c) attend a middle-school dance?

This week, the answer is d. All of the above.

For those who selected answer b): I can remember my own drug prevention talk in the early 80’s in Trenton, New Jersey. That was during the years of the “scared straight” philosophy. I wasnʻt quite sure why they would ever let that guy come yell at a bunch of kids about drugs and situations we didnʻt quite understand, but I do remember thinking, I don’t want to be like him. So maybe it was a bit effective. Unfortunately, later data on that decade didn’t show much progress. In those same years, when at home between TV shows, a certain well known ad was constantly showing up – do you remember the cracking of the egg into the frying pan and the stern voice saying, “This is your brain. Now this is your brain on drugs” as the eggs sizzled in the pan? I may seriously be dating myself with this one…

At HPA, we’ve moved far beyond the old “scared straight” and data-dump approaches. Today, our focus is holistic, teaching students in age-appropriate ways about how substances affect the brain and body, while also building resilience, connection, and healthy habits. We focus on skills that matter at every stage: play and exercise for our youngest learners, stress management and goal-setting for adolescents, and safe decision-making for teens who will likely face real-world choices. Most importantly, research shows that belonging, trust, and strong relationships – with family, school, and peers – are the greatest protectors against substance misuse. Together, we share the work of creating safe, healthy environments where all children can thrive.

This week and next, we’re putting that holistic approach into action. Ian Groves from Atom Theory Prevention – a trusted partner to HPA for nearly ten years – is back on campus working with our students. Ian knows our programs, understands our kids, and has built strong relationships with staff, students, and families alike. He brings the latest insights in prevention, helping us all keep our children feeling safe, connected, and supported.

We are working hard at this at every division – education, community, connection, and responsibility to others and self. HPA remains a place of closeness and understanding. It is a place where every student is known and seen. A place where we take our collective responsibility for one another to heart. We have healthy, sometimes nerve rattling, activities throughout our weekend with a middle school dance, sport competitions, and my favorite, the annual HPA Keiki Triathlon. If you want to see some serious healthy competition, come see our kindergarten class swim, bike and run. These experiences invite students to stretch, discover, have fun, and grow in ways that build confidence and resilience.

Thank you for a great K-8 ʻOhana Days at our Village Campus. Thank you for a great parent and family giving season – go 4th grade! Thank you for your energy and commitment to our mission and the health and wellness of your children

I am grateful to be a leader in education during a time when best practices are rooted in understanding, belonging, and support – rather than egg-frying fear or punishment. This approach resonates with me personally and reflects the core values of HPA.

Have safe and fun-filled final days of September.

Gratefully,

Fred Wawner
Head of School

Pilina: Weekly Highlights Connecting Us on Campus

Bringing together highlights, stories, and connections from across our Middle School community this week.

Aloha Middle School Parents and Families,

By the time this bulletin reaches your inbox, our Middle Schoolers will be gearing up to dance and celebrate at our yearly Back to School Dance. This year’s theme is “Into Space.” A huge mahalo to our ʻOhana Association and all of the support they provide in decorating our “space” and feeding our hungry Ka Makani at this great event. I also want to highlight the extra mile our faculty goes to ensure the safe supervision of our students during these events.

It was incredible to meet with you all during our ʻOhana Day afternoon this past Wednesday. Our Experience HPA Passports were a hit and it was delightful to engage our Student Council as leaders during the raffle process. Middle School teachers loved opening up their spaces to you all.

Here are some helpful highlights for the coming week:

Guest Speaker: The Middle School is thrilled to welcome Ian Groves, a prevention specialist, to empower our students to make healthy choices and recognize signs of substance issues. This coming week, Mr. Groves will speak with our 7th-grade PE classes, 8th-grade Capstone students, and our entire school in both large and small formats.

Mālama Kaiāulu Theme Week: A kind reminder that Mālama Kaiāulu Theme Week is Monday, October 6 to Thursday, October 9 and there is no school for students on Friday, October 10. Please read emails from your childʻs advisor closely for detailed information regarding each grade level’s trips. Our Mālama Kaiāulu Theme Week immerses each student in learning, service and fun on our incredible island and it is an essential part of our curriculum and programming.

• Upcoming: Details will be shared soon regarding our upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 23 and 24, along with our Spirit Week, October 27 – 31.

Residential Life

‘Ohana Days are right around the corner, and we look forward to seeing many of you on campus next week. In addition to conferences with your child’s teachers, there will be a slew of varsity athletic competitions throughout the weekend that we hope you will be able to attend, whether your child is on that particular team or not. We encourage all of our students to go out and support their classmates in their competitions, and would like to extend that invitation to all of you who will be around campus next weekend

During this special weekend, many of our students will sign out of the dormitories to spend time with their families off campus, which is wonderful. Know that there are also many students whose families are not able to join us in person for the weekend, and if you are among those who will be present, your child may ask to bring a friend or two out with them for an afternoon, a dinner off campus, or even for overnight. We thank you all in advance for those willing and able to accommodate such requests, as students always appreciate such opportunities. We only ask that you encourage your students to communicate with the school about their plans so that we can get all of the appropriate permissions in place for their friends to join you.

Finally, there have been some queries about the best way to connect with your child’s Dorm Head during ‘Ohana Days. While the Dorm Heads will be around throughout the day on Thursday, they will be tending to many different responsibilities to our community on this day, and their time will be limited. However, they will all be available throughout most of the day on Friday during the faculty conferences. If you have a break between conferences and want to say hello to your child’s Dorm Head, feel free to head to their dorm and they will be present in their respective dormitories.

FLIK - Dining Services

Congratulations to our Executive Chef, Thomas Viernes, who was recognized this year as the FISD Chef of the Year. Originally from Honoka’a, Chef Thomas has over 30 years of experience in food service and has been with HPA since our partnership with Flik began in 2019. His efforts not only provide healthy, good-tasting food to our students and staff, but have also focused on finding and supporting local food options from Hawaii Island and the state.

Looking ahead, we will be sharing a food and dining service feedback survey in October. Please take some time to provide any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions that you and your child(ren) have to make the dining experience better. Thank you in advance!

Finally, we are happy to announce that the entire Flik team at HPA was awarded the FISD Account of the Year. This celebrates our Flik team’s platinum service, creative food prep, care for our students, and fiscal responsibility within the entire FISD organization. Congratulations to Chef Thomas and the entire Flik team for these awesome accomplishments!

ʻOhana Association

While the kids are dancing the night away at the Middle School Dance, join us for a fun Parent Social tonight, Friday, September 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Isaacs Art Center. Enjoy pūpū, cocktails, and great conversation with fellow Middle School parents – no chaperoning required! It’s a perfect opportunity to connect, unwind, and celebrate alongside the kids. We hope to see you there — come hungry, thirsty, and ready to mingle!

The ʻOhana Association is excited to present their Wā Pilina ʻOhana Series for the 2025-26 school year. These events are an invitation for our HPA ʻohana to learn and connect through moʻolelo, immersive experiences and stewardship opportunities, guided by Kumu Kūwalu and Waimea cultural practitioners and stewards.

Our next Wā Pilina event, Wai in Waimea, is on Tuesday, October 7, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm with the Waimea Department of Water Supply. The presentation will include information about our drinking water, emergency planning, capital improvement projects, and time for questions. Please sign up here. We hope to see you there!

Our ʻOhana Association hosts a variety of events and activities for our school community throughout the year. As parents of HPA, you are automatically part of the ʻOhana Association. There are many ways to participate, and we encourage everyone to get involved. It is a great way to meet your fellow parents and support our amazing Ka Makani community. Mark your calendar for these upcoming events, and be sure to email ohana@hpa.edu with any questions, or to find out what volunteer opportunities are available!

Safety Protocols

Campus Access
Campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.

If a family member of a student needs to meet with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, please contact them to arrange a meeting on campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.

At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.

If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.

  • Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately. Follow up with your supervisor ASAP.
  • Anything out of the ordinary: email Dan Wilkinson, HPA Security Supervisor at dwilkinson@hpa.edu

CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message), and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.

Safe2SpeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.

All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
