Aloha Lower School families,
A day to celebrate diversity and joy, Lower School Rainbow Day was an idea borne from last year’s Student Council. In their words, “This will be a special day celebrating the diversity of everyone. A day to honor acceptance, happiness, joy, and pride. We are all unique. Together, we make a beautiful rainbow.” The student leaders contemplated the rainbow as a symbol, noting that “rainbows are especially common here in Waimea, home of HPA. We see them all the time! We see a rainbow when it is rainy and sunny at the same time…the sun shines through the water droplets [to form the rainbow]. A rainbow represents happiness, joy, and acceptance of all identities.” Today, students wore colors of the rainbow spectrum and came together to form a complete Lower School rainbow! The council leaders also continued our Kindness Rocks Project tradition, painting rocks with beautiful images and messages for schoolmates to joyfully find, and then hide again for others. Their wish to spread joy in this sweet K-5 activity exhibits their living mālama kaiāulu as we engage in pilina and bring lōkahi to one another. Having an awareness of contributing to the joy of our community is everyone’s kuleana and we all reap the benefits. How wonderful our student leaders wish to recognize everyone’s individuality and the beautiful community we all create!
A reminder to all Village Campus families that next week is our nutrition presentation from our FLIK food services nutritionist, Jenna Lewis. Taking place on Monday, May 15, from 8:30 to 9:30 am in our Village Campus Dining Hall, you may also drop off your child(ren) and come straight over for some refreshments starting at 8:00 am. Topics covered will include raising young people to be intuitive and adventurous eaters, affirming cultural and traditional practices around food, and overall messaging when it comes to food and children. We hope you can attend this special family event!
Our yearbooks have arrived! These will be distributed to students on Monday, May 22, and they will have time in the day for their schoolmates to sign if desired. If you have not ordered a yearbook, but still wish to, you may reach out to Aunty Lynn at villagecampusoffice@hpa.edu.
Please take a look at K-8 Librarian, Mrs. Kristin Tarnas’ latest newsletter. She includes links to the Lynn Taylor Library page, where you can find summer reading lists for your keiki as they head into the summer holiday. Continuing with reading over the summer while they go on adventures and spend quality time with family is a great way to keep up literary skills as well as engage together in book talks!
A very heartfelt mahalo to our wonderful ʻOhana Association who gave our beloved teachers a special week of appreciation and gratitude. Teacher Appreciation Week was full of lovely surprises, great and small. From thoughtful messages and sweet door decorations, to a surprise faculty luncheon and gift giveaway, to morning beverage deliveries, and beautiful lei — our faculty and staff feel so loved and appreciated. Thank you to the very many parents and families who give their time, support, energy, and aloha to us. What a beautiful community to be a part of!
Have a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend, Lower School ʻohana!
Me ka hauʻoli,

Dora Kwong

A note from Mr. Chickering, Middle School Principal
Aloha Grade 5 families,
I know it’s hard to believe — as I went through it just last year! — but your children are heading into Middle School next year! Middle School is a time of change — with multiple teachers, new schedules, new programs, lockers, and more! It can be a lot to wrap your head around for both students and parents, and in order to shed some light on these changes, we will be hosting a few activities the week of May 15.
On Monday, May 15, from 3:30 to 4:40 pm in the Village Campus Drama Hall, we will host a parent information session to share the overall structure of the Middle School and answer questions you may have. Students are welcome to come to this as well, but we will also be hosting a few sessions for them during school that week.
Ms. Baydo will be bringing a group of 6th-grade students to her time with Grade 5 on Tuesday, May 16, to answer 5th-grade students’ questions and help share some insights to demystify 6th grade and Middle School.
On Wednesday, May 17, I will host the Grade 5 students for a preview of the Middle School program, a tour of the Middle School area, and a special recess on Kohala Field.
I hope these sessions will give a good overview of what to expect and what to be excited about when we start 6th grade in August. Please know that you can always reach out to me with questions at any time.
All my best,
Glenn Chickering
Middle School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
As we near the end of the school year, it’s an opportune time to take a look back at where we started and celebrate all of our growth along the way. The capstone presentations held a few weeks ago got us started, as we witnessed students identifying their passions and finding ways to utilize HPA’s Core Skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity to give back to their communities. It was truly inspiring to see the fruits of their labor.
At this week’s assembly our Student Council set up a quiz show with questions that looked back on our year and some of its highlights. Each advisor and one of their advisees formed a team and our Student Council emceed the contest to take a look back and haʻina the story of our year. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our year and reflect on all that we have accomplished as a community.
Speaking of the story of our year, the Village Campus yearbooks are in and looking great. We will be passing these out to students on Monday, May 22, and giving them time in the day to have their friends sign. If you have not ordered a yearbook, but still want to, please reach out to Aunty Lynn at villagecampusoffice@hpa.edu.
We are happy to share our summer reading books for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Ms. Tarnas has these books in the library. Please fill out this form to order books for your child:

Families will be directed to park on the lawns to the south and east of GPAC and should arrive by 9:45 am to be settled and ready to start the ceremony promptly at 10:00 am.
We will also be live-streaming this event on our HPA YouTube channel for those who are unable to attend. You are welcome to share this link with family and friends: 8th-grade Transition Ceremony – YouTube live stream link for May 24, 2023

From the desk of your Poʻo Kumu (Division Principal), Kaʻai Spencer
Aloha e nā ʻohana o ka makani!
E kaupē aku nō i ka hoe a kō mai. This phrase is a reference to paddling and the act of pulling a paddle through its full range of motion. This phrase would be used to encourage finishing all the way through the full completion of something. One must go forth with the task that is started and finish it. This is similar to the message that was shared with all of our Upper School students during Tuesday’s assembly.
Now that track season is officially complete, a sport that I coach, I used a very inspiring moment during our Big Island Championship meet to illustrate the importance of finishing strong. For those who are less familiar, the sport of track and field is scored based on points for each finisher. First-place finishers earn 10 points for their team, second place earns eight points, all the way down to one point for sixth-place finishers. As we approached the final event of the track meet, we were in second place by two points.
As the final race started, which is the 1600-meter relay, the head timing official walked over to confirm my awareness of the situation. He wanted to ensure I knew that if we won the race, we would be tied in points with the team that was sitting in first place at that moment. Then, he said that all ties go to a tie-breaker, which is given to the team that wins the final race. At this moment in time, we were on the second leg of the relay and we were in third place making a strong push to move into second place. I tried to hold back my excitement with every bit of secrecy training that I have acquired throughout my kolohe (rascal) childhood.
When the final member of the relay team received the baton, we were in the lead, only for a short while. We dropped to second after the first 150 meters and remained in second until around the 350-meter point of the race. Then, our anchor runner, Caroline Betlach, shifted to a speed that nobody has previously seen from her and she squeaked by the finish line ahead of the other team by .07 seconds! Winner!
The team was ecstatic that we won the race, and I was ecstatic that we won the BIIF Championship while trying my best to hold the secret within to allow the team to hear the rankings from the meet announcer. When the points were finally counted and the rankings were announced, our girls were jumping for joy, while also asking me if I knew all along.
The moral of the story that I shared at the assembly was all about finishing strong. With all of the changes and drama of the relay event, any of our relay team runners could have folded and allowed themselves to settle for second place, but they didn’t. They maintained their poise and their grit. They dug down to a place that is only attainable when doing something for a reason that is bigger than ourselves, and it was a beautiful thing to witness.
We are currently in the anchor leg of the school year. If the school year were a 400-meter track, it is similar to reaching the 350-meter mark of a 400-meter lap. We can choose to dig deep and strive for a strong finish, or we can fold and settle for less. We have come this far, so we might as well finish strong! Final exams are worth 20% of grades, so it could have a big impact. Whether we are running a race, paddling a canoe, or closing a school year, finishing strong is very important. We got this!
Ke aloha nō,

Kaʻai Spencer

Students should make every effort to clear off their points before graduation, if they do not, they will be expected to return after graduation to work off the outstanding conduct points. They may still participate in the Commencement Exercises; however, no diploma will be received, and no official transcript sent to their college or university.
Returning students who are failing Citizenship at the end of the semester will be required to work the outstanding points down to zero at the start of the next academic year and will be precluded from receiving various end-of-the-year awards, such as the Dean’s List and will be placed on academic probation and required to meet with Mr. Mark Noetzel, Dean of Campus Life, at the beginning of the new academic year.

Even if they will not need transportation to the airport, we appreciate your assistance as we plan for the end of the year.
With less than a month left in the current year, our residential students are preparing for the end of the year. To prepare for summer and move-out, students were informed this past week of the process for packing up their rooms.
- Starting next week, to help students start to declutter and begin slowly packing up, we will be holding a clothing and school supplies drive to benefit local students in need.
- All returning students may store up to three (3) boxes or suitcases in our locked storage closets for the summer. The school has a limited supply of storage boxes that students are welcome to utilize.
- Graduating seniors who wish to sign out with their families before graduation are welcome to do so but will be required to fully pack up their rooms before doing so. They may leave a set of bed sheets and a small bag with clothes they will need for Baccalaureate, Commencement, and Grad Night, but should otherwise be moved out.

Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a student’s family member need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
• Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
• Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Families, it is extremely important that the school is able to communicate not only with parents/guardians, but also with each student, via their mobile device. We are asking all students in grades 6-12, who bring a phone to school, to download theSafe2SpeakUp app.
Safe2SpeakUp allows us to inform students of emergency events when immediate action is needed. Teachers and administrators would also receive the information so that our community is on the same page. Please review the instructions below and assist your child with downloading the Safe2SpeakUp app.

This is a companion app to CrisisGo, an app that teachers and administrators use on their devices. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school anonymously about any behaviors they are concerned about.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
