Families of K, 1st, and 2nd grade students are all invited to attend! Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will also be viewers in the audience. All children will be dismissed from GPAC immediately after the show.

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
In our assemblies this month, we are working our way through sharing student work that showcases HPA’s Core Skills. At this week’s assembly, we took a look at HPA’s Core Skill of Creativity. Students in Ms. Marchildon’s Art from Mauka to Makai class shared some amazing work they did in drawing different species that are endemic to the island.
This Week’s Fly on Wall buzzed off campus and traveled with our Turtle Tagging Club to the Waikoloa coast to team up with Ms. Jim, Mr. Rice, and the Upper School turtle tagging crew to measure and collect data on a dozen or so turtles. This Club was created and is led by a grade 12 Capstone Student. It was a great opportunity for two of our Grade 8 students to see firsthand how to safely handle and tag turtles to help monitor the health of the turtles and the turtle population. We set up at the Hilton and its wonderful access to a natural lagoon, where we met some turtles that were old friends – having been tagged by the team just last year, and some brand new friends as well, being tagged and logged for the first time. Students were also able to explain what we were doing and why we were doing it to some of the curious guests, giving them a great chance to showcase their work.
Meanwhile, in the Ulu Mau Garden, our grade 6 students teamed up with our kindergarten class in another wonderful edition of our Village Campus Wā Pilina program. They were a great team, getting lots of great work done to relocate our garden beds and optimize our garden’s production.
As we enter Black History Month we are excited to listen to the series of podcasts made by our Grade 7 students in a collaborative project led by Ms. Monello, Ms. Boswell, and Ms. Tarnas. Students chose African Americans whose work and contributions may have been overlooked by society and will highlight them and their in an interview-style podcast. There will be some familiar names in there too! Next week, we will set up listening stations in the Library, and advisory classes will visit at different times in the coming weeks and students can browse as they would like before school and during recesses. We will also make the podcasts available for parents to listen to some days after school and will be in touch next week with more information on days the library is available.
Re-enrollment season is here! All eligible students will be offered the opportunity to re-enroll at HPA. As soon as your re-enrollment agreement is ready, you will receive an email from the school asking you to please complete the re-enrollment agreement in myHPA by Thursday, February 15, 2024. Please review these instructions carefully to complete your Enrollment Agreement in myHPA. If your child is not planning to return to HPA for the 2024-2025 academic year, please email admissions@hpa.edu at your earliest convenience to let us know.
We hope you can join us at our parent pau hana from 3:30 to 5:30 pm on Tuesday, February 6 at Atherton House on HPA’s Upper Campus. It is a great way for us to build connections, share thoughts, and foster a sense of community within our school. We hope to see everyone there!

Upper School
From the desk of your Poʻo Kumu (Division Principal), Kaʻai Spencer
Aloha e nā maka o ka ʻupena a ka makani!
We have just concluded one of the best days of the year for the Upper School: our annual International Day! This is a day that focuses on celebrating the many cultures and traditions that are represented on our campus. Seeing our international students leading workshops is always uplifting, especially because they have the added challenge of speaking in a language that is not their first language in front of their peers. We also have students from Hawaiʻi who focus on customs from here and students from the United States who focus on their own cultural practices that are not otherwise represented within our international student population.
Hawaiʻi has long been a hub for cultural exchange that is inclusive of people from many far reaches of the world. Setting aside a day to intentionally highlight this diversity is extra special and very important. One exciting addition that we included this year was a group of students from Kanu O Ka ʻĀina Public Charter School. They brought along a group of 23 students to participate in the morning workshops to learn more about other cultures. Then they contributed a beautiful hula performance in the afternoon that amazed the whole GPAC theater. This was the first time that we have been able to coordinate a collaborative effort with students from another school for International Day, and I truly hope that it is the start of a long-lasting relationship.
When we focus on the student experience of being a member of our Ka Makani community, events like our annual International Day are surely a highlight that sticks in the memories of our students. These are the types of experiences that our students wish they could do again and again if the opportunity were available. As our current families start to weigh thoughts about re-enrollment or transferring schools, the community-building events really set us apart. Other examples of experiential events that our students often reflect upon include Lā Kūʻokoʻa, HPA’s Olympics, and the Commencement ceremonies. These are moments that are intentionally included to foster community and inclusion. The next community event will be at the end of February, which is HPA’s Olympics. Those times are always filled with memories. Let’s keep the good times rolling.
Ke aloha nō,

Kaʻai Spencer

Student Life
Today, the entire school participated in International Day at the Upper School. There were 27 workshops that our students hosted where their peers could learn more about the country they or their families are from. After the workshops, students enjoyed a variety of food, all made by students and assisted by FLIK, highlighting their countries’ culinary treasures. The day ended with a cultural assembly where students shared music, dance, and knowledge of their country. What a good way to head into the weekend!

Residential Life
Today, the HPA Upper School had the opportunity to engage in one of our greatest traditions- the annual International Day! This day is especially important for our boarding community, as all of our international students help put on the events of the day in one way or another- leading workshops about cultural aspects of their home, cooking favorite recipes from home to share with the whole school, or presenting dances and musical performances for the whole school in the afternoon. A truly special day, we say a sincere and enthusiastic “Thank You!” to all of our international students, their helpers in the community, and the many faculty who also work throughout the day to make sure the event is a success! If you would like more information about this special day, you can review the communication from Mr. Jeffrey Mix, our International Student Coordinator, that was sent out on Monday, January 29, here.

Other College Scholarships
Seniors can find information regarding several other college scholarships by looking in their “Drive” folder in their Scoir accounts, where College Counseling regularly uploads scholarship opportunities. Students can also search for national college scholarships using one of the many online search engines available such as Fastweb.
Important Reminders for Seniors Who Have Submitted College Applications
Congratulations to the many seniors who have submitted their first college applications! It has been a pleasure working with you and seeing your high-quality applications and the thoughtful essays you have created. Moving forward, here are a few important reminders:
- Check your email regularly. Applicants usually receive an email from each college to which they have applied with the status of their application or instructions for setting up an online application portal. If you have not received an email from a college within two weeks of applying, please follow up with the college or reach out to us for assistance.
- If applicable, send your official test scores (ACT, SAT, TOEFL, and/or DuoLingo) to all of the colleges for which you’d like test scores to be part of your application.
- If you would like to be considered for need-based financial aid, please make sure your family has submitted the CSS Profile if it is required by any of the colleges to which you have applied. The FAFSA, which is required for all U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens applying for need-based financial aid, will be available on December 31, 2023.
- Please remember that the deadline for requesting your college counselor to review any additional essays is December 15.
- It is very important that you update your “applying” and “applied” columns in Scoir as you add colleges and submit your applications. This will ensure that all of your school materials are submitted by college counseling in a timely fashion.
Keep up the great work! Stop by anytime or contact us at college@hpa.edu with questions.

Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a student’s family member need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
• Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
• Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up a CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
