Aloha Lower School families,
As we wrap up our third quarter at the Lower School, it is with great pleasure and immense pride that we reflect on the incredible achievements and contributions made by our young artists, scholars, and community members these past weeks.
Our K-5 artists have once again dazzled us with their creativity, wonder, and pursuit of excellence, through their outstanding art creations, led by our dear Lower School Art Teacher, Mrs. Alexa Hustace. We are proud to announce that our Kindergarten class has been accepted into the 36th Annual Young At Art Juried Exhibition 2024 for their artwork entitled, “Yayoi Kusama Pumpkins.” The show will run from March 2nd through March 29th at Thelma Parker Memorial Community School Library in Waimea and we hope everyone can take a visit to see these wonderful creations. Alongside this Kindergarten exhibit, we are also proud to have seven pieces from students K-5 featured.
Elliot L., Kindergarten, “The Waterfall”
Matteo D., 1st grade, “Kilauea”
Noah P., 1st grade, “Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa”
Zoe M., 3rd grade, “Sunset Castle”
India A., 4th grade, “The Red Room”
Alex S., 4th grade, “Black and White”
Coltrane B., 5th grade, “The Garden”

Each piece created not only depicts artistic growth and skill development but also the unique perspectives of our students. We are truly inspired by their passion for the arts and commend them for their creativity and hard work. Thank you for teaching and supporting our young artists, Mrs. Hustace! In addition to this exhibit, there will be an art event called Youth Arts Square, happening tomorrow in Hilo on Saturday, March 9 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. We love to support all our art enthusiasts and hope you might take this opportunity to engage in youth art appreciation!
Last Friday, we were thrilled to celebrate the culmination of our 5th grade Capstone projects. Our students spent the semester delving deeply into their chosen topics, demonstrating HPA’s core skills of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the knowledge and experience they have gained throughout this process. This year, students could elect to create a documentary, exhibit, essay, performance, or website. They conducted historical research, connected with experts in our local community, and expressed their findings in sound and creative ways to our greater community. (If you did not get to come to the viewings, here is a link to the wonderful collection of documentaries our students created, and here is the menu of excellent project topics students shared.) Several students elected to then submit their work to the Hawaiʻi History Fair at UH Hilo on Saturday, March 2. We are so proud six HPA students who presented at the fair have been invited to share their projects at the next Hawaiʻi State History Fair at Windward Community College on Oʻahu on April 20th!
Kimberly A, exhibit, The Invention of the Sewing Machine Changed Women’s Lives
Brodie B., exhibit, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
Paholalaʻi C., exhibit, The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom
Hayley M., documentary, The Great Mahele
Sydney S. documentary, Agent Orange
Vivian W., documentary, The 1986 Chernobyl Accident
Mahalo to Kumu Larsen and our entire Capstone teaching team (Ms. Nori, Mrs. Tarnas, Ms. Hustace, Ms. Monello, and Mr. Bernstein) for all of their guidance, patience, dedication, and support for all of our 5th graders on this amazing Capstone experience! We are so proud of all our young scholars.
In addition to academic achievements, we continue to be immensely grateful for the generosity of our entire HPA ʻohana. The success of our 4th grade-led K-8 Plant Sale last Friday is a testament to the heart and commitment of our families and community members. Through our sales and your generous donations, we collected a whopping grand total of $805.00! After offsetting some of the costs of the event, the rest will go directly into our HPA garden program fund, which supports our many community partners on our island home. This marks the very first deposit into this new fund we created to ensure the sustainability of the garden program and our support of our community through resources and initiatives. Thank you so much, Lower School ʻohana! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and supported this important fundraiser!
Rounding out our last few days of school this week, we held a very special author visit for our Kindergarten through 2nd grade readers and writers. Frances Kakugawa, author of many children’s and adult books, came to talk with us about her wonderful writing, her inspiration for her stories, and how she came to publish her books. This special opportunity allowed our students to engage directly with a published author, learn about the creative process, and explore the power of storytelling. We are confident that this experience will leave a lasting impression on our students and further foster a love for reading and writing. How wonderful that Aunty Frances brought along her dear friend and main character of her books, Wordsworth! Our K-2 grade learners were especially delighted to know that Frances Kakugawa also happens to be the aunty of our very own Aunty Lynn from the Village Campus office!
In closing, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our students, families, faculty, and staff for their continued dedication and support. Together, we have created a vibrant and nurturing learning community where every child can thrive and succeed. As we celebrate the achievements of this third quarter, let us also look ahead with anticipation and excitement for all that the remaining school year holds. It is an exciting time and we look forward to continuing our journey together with all of you!
Have a rejuvenating Spring Break, Lower School ʻohana!
Me ka mahalo nui,

Dora Kwong

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Glenn Chickering pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Glenn Chickering
Aloha Middle School families,
We hope you caught our Village Campus Players and their beautiful rendition of Seussical on Wednesday night. The cast and crew worked hard and their efforts showed in their performance. This was our first attempt at an after-school musical production and it was great to have Lower and Middle School students working together. Our Art from Mauka to Makai visual arts class contributed by creating beautiful sea life props. A big Mahalo to Ms. Wadlegger, Ms. Di Bartolo, and Ms. M for all their efforts to prepare the students and the stage.
This week’s Fly on the Wall had the honor of spending time backstage with the cast and crew of Seussical as they prepared for the show. It was great to see how excited the students were, and how they were able to focus on that with calm confidence and eagerness to show how much their hard work prepared them. The excitement and camaraderie were infectious and I found myself in their circle doing vocal warm-ups and mostly being on key with everybody — I think so, anyway. A big mahalo to all the parent volunteers who helped with make-up and set-up, clean-up, and supplying food for the students (and principal). It takes a Village Campus!
We also hope you enjoyed the Student-led Conferences, where our students had a chance to showcase the work they have been doing to foster HPA’s Core Skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. It is always good to get students to reflect on their learning and take pride in their work to share with parents.
A reminder that there is a wonderful event coming up tonight featuring a number of our Ka Makani community: Hawaiʻi Storytellers. This storytelling event will feature community members from the Kona and Kohala side of Hawaiʻi Island and will take place at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea on Friday, March 8, 2024. The event will be hosted by Civil Beat Editor-At-Large, Naka Nathaniel.
Doors open at 5:00 pm where you may register, participate in interactive activities, and pre-purchase items at the concession stand. The official storyteller program will begin at 6:00 pm. If you can’t make it live, a free recording will be sent to everyone who registers.
Featured Storytellers:
Manu Powers – Regent of the Daughters of Hawaiʻi
Boots Lupenui – Native Hawaiian Fine Artist, Musician and Documentarian
Kolby Akamu Moser – Native Hawaiian Commercial & Documentary Filmmaker, Director of Hometown Legends, Podcast Host of UNCUT Hawaiʻi, and Founder of ARIA Studios.
Dagan Bernstein – Educator, Songwriter, and Musician from Waimea
Naka Nathaniel (Host) – Editor-at-Large at Honolulu Civil Beat

Mahalo,

Glenn Chickering

Capstone Update from K-8 Capstone Coordinator, Dagan Bernstein
Aloha mai kākou! Our capstone students continue their impressive journey, diligently tackling their projects. Since December, they’ve refined their plans based on feedback, ensuring alignment with their goals and timelines. This preparation set the stage for the creation phase, where they’ve been actively building their projects.
These final few weeks are crucial as students implement these changes and polish their final products. By the end of the quarter, just before Spring Break, they’ll submit their completed projects to their capstone advisors. We are also excited to share that the Grade 8 Capstone Exhibition will be held at Hale ʻĪnana on the Village Campus on Thursday, April 18, from 2:30 to 3:45 pm. All HPA families are welcome; stay tuned for more detailed information as we get closer!

Aloha e nā maka o ka ʻupena a ka makani!
What an interesting week! It can be challenging to enjoy a few days of exhilarating fun during the highly anticipated Olympics competitions, then return to one week of classes, only to be followed by spring break. It can be a tricky shift of focus, but if anyone can do it, and do it well, we can. Our students have been putting in the work, and they are deserving of some breaks in the flow. I believe that a good balance of stress, followed by a period of rest and relaxation, can lead to growth and progress.
I hope everybody enjoys a well-deserved Spring Break. We are blessed to have a spring break that is long enough to allow our international students to make the long trip home for a comfortable break while also allowing the rest of our students to enjoy a vacation with their friends and family. When we all return from the break, we will officially be in the fourth quarter of the school year! The year is going by quickly; the fourth quarter will be done before we know it. Like the anchor leg of a relay, we need to finish strong!
Our underclassmen will start registering for their future classes after returning to school. We are working feverishly on solidifying our course catalog and are excited to start the course registration process once we return. Before focusing too much on that, let’s begin with a restful spring break to give us all a chance to return refreshed and ready to close the year. E hoʻonanea kākou!
Ke aloha nō,

Kaʻai Spencer

Student Life
Upcoming Student Life Events
Senior Prom 2024
The students have voted, and this year’s theme is the Red Carpet. We are encouraging the students to dress elegantly, classily, and formally. Tickets went on sale all week; seniors were able to purchase first, then juniors, and then the rest of the school. We have been able to keep the prices the same as last year: $110 per person for a formal dinner, dancing, a sit-down meal, and professional photos. We accept KaMakaniCash or cash only. Only seniors are permitted to bring an outside HPA guest. We are limited to 275 attendees. The students were alerted in the email and at assembly that if they are failing Citizenship (4 or more Conduct Points), they would need to be passing in order to attend.
Please refer to the email sent out on Tuesday, February 27, for more information, including the dress code and information for the seniors to bring a guest.
Student Council Elections
Upon returning from Spring Break, we will begin the Student Council elections for the 2024-25 academic year. Our elections are staggered, and we will start with the Executive positions: President and Vice President, who run in pairs, then Secretary and Treasurer. After that, we move to Class Representatives and, finally the Executive Dorm Rep. This will take most of the month of April to complete. A detailed email has been sent to the students outlining our process, the job descriptions, and our Student Council Constitution.
Ka Makani Travel
We are in the final stages of confirming itineraries for Spring Break 2025. Japan is open for enrollment. Options to Peru and a combination tour that includes Switzerland, Italy, France & Spain will open for enrollment in the coming weeks.
- Spring Break 2025: Japan: Land of the Rising Sun with EF Tours: Open for enrollment
EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship Fund offers $1000 scholarships.
Please contact Ka Makani Travel Coordinator Adrienne White (awhite@hpa.edu) for information on registration and eligibility.
Residential Life
Happy Spring Break everyone! We hope that everyone has safe and easy travels and a wonderful Spring Break! This past week at an all-residential student meeting, we discussed the importance of one of our Core Values, Wonder. As HPA defines it, Wonder is to be curious, appreciative, and content. As our students embark on various adventures for Spring Break, we encourage them to practice this value — take time to appreciate new experiences, and make memories with old or new friends. Seek out new knowledge and dive into new experiences. Be content with what you have, and find the wealth in wisdom over material things.
As a reminder, if you have not yet sent in your child’s travel information for their return from Spring Break, please do so as soon as possible so that we can make arrangements for pick-ups at the airport on Sunday, March 24, and Monday, March 25. You can view the communication from the Travel Office here.

Here’s the spring athletics schedule and weekly schedule for our spring sports season. GO KA MAKANI! You can also access the athletics schedule on the myHPA calendar.
College Counseling
News for Senior Families:
Financial Aid & Scholarships
FAFSA
All U.S. families wishing to be considered for federal need-based financial aid must submit the 2024-2025 FAFSA, which was released on December 31, 2023. Both student and parent must register and receive a FAFSA ID. Please reach out to us at college@hpa.edu with any questions.
CSS PROFILE
Many private colleges and universities also require the CSS Profile as part of the financial aid application process. A complete list of colleges that require the CSS Profile is available at CSS Participating Institutions.
Hawaiʻi Community Foundation Scholarships
HPA students with US citizenship can become eligible for hundreds of regional scholarships by completing the scholarship application at the Hawai’i Community Foundation. The application deadline is on Wednesday, February 29, 2024, at 4 pm. Families must complete the FAFSA to be eligible for scholarships through the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation.
Hawaiʻi Community Federal Credit Union Scholarships
The Hawaiʻi Community Federal Credit Union also offers a number of scholarships for Hawaiʻi Island students. The HCFCU scholarship application is due Monday, March 4, 2023.
Other College Scholarships
Seniors can find information regarding several other college scholarships by looking in their “Drive” folder in their Scoir accounts, where College Counseling regularly uploads scholarship opportunities. Students can also search for national college scholarships using one of the many online search engines available such as Fastweb.
Important Reminders for Seniors Who Have Submitted College Applications
Congratulations to the many seniors who have submitted their first college applications! It has been a pleasure working with you and seeing your high-quality applications and the thoughtful essays you have created. Moving forward, here are a few important reminders:
- Check your email regularly. Applicants usually receive an email from each college to which they have applied with the status of their application or instructions for setting up an online application portal. If you have not received an email from a college within two weeks of applying, please follow up with the college or reach out to us for assistance.
- If applicable, send your official test scores (ACT, SAT, TOEFL, and/or DuoLingo) to all of the colleges for which you’d like test scores to be part of your application.
- If you would like to be considered for need-based financial aid, please make sure your family has submitted the CSS Profile if it is required by any of the colleges to which you have applied. The FAFSA, which is required for all U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens applying for need-based financial aid, will be available on December 31, 2023.
- Please remember that the deadline for requesting your college counselor to review any additional essays is December 15.
- It is very important that you update your “applying” and “applied” columns in Scoir as you add colleges and submit your applications. This will ensure that all of your school materials are submitted by college counseling in a timely fashion.
Keep up the great work! Stop by anytime or contact us at college@hpa.edu with questions.

Health & Wellness
HPA Senior Katelin C. ‘24 continued her fentanyl awareness capstone by passing out free Narcan to Upper School employees and students with parental consent. It was incredibly successful!! If you consented for your student to receive their kit, and they haven’t picked it up yet, that’s ok! Katelin will be available today, Friday, March 8 from 11:00 to 11:30 am in the dining hall. Mahalo nui, Katelin!

Join us in the garden! We have planned several upcoming community workdays to learn and grow together. All are welcome, please use this link to sign up or email wquayle@hpa.edu or lprutow@hpa.edu with any questions.

ʻOhana Association
What is Wā Pilina and why is that the name of this series?
The word pilina means association, relationship, and connection. Wā refers to a period of time. HPA started the Lower School Wā Pilina program two years ago in order to have intentional time and space for Lower Schoolers to connect with others under the umbrella of, and in connection to, Mālama Kaiāulu. Lower School students meet across grade levels to connect with and learn from one another. From Enrichment Day to art shows and Makahiki games to reading times — Wā Pilina opportunities have expanded through the three divisions, as well as across specialty areas.
Our new Wā Pilina ʻOhana Series aligns school and ʻOhana Association practices with intentionality. We hope you will join us!

Isaacs Art Center
Isaacs Art Center is free and open to the public, Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and on Saturdays by appointment. Gallery works for sale may also be viewed on our website. Be sure to also visit our Instagram and Facebook pages for highlights from ongoing exhibitions. Sales from gallery artwork have supported the HPA Financial Aid program since its opening in 2004.
Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a student’s family member need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
• Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
• Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up a CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
