Week of 10/25/24
What's Happening at HPA This Week?
School Bulletins for the Week of 10/25/24
Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong
Aloha Lower School families!
Blue pumpkins, pueo studies, ceramic pinch pots, apple experiments, dividing fractions, Makahiki games, personal narratives, and sidewalk chalk drawings. A (very informal!) poll among students revealed a fantastic variety of favorite activities from this week. Where else besides HPA’s Lower School can you do all that in five days, plus practicing yoga, voting for their favorite book characters in a mock presidential election, and writing to pen pals in China?! Experiential learning across our kindergarten through 5th grades reveal a plethora of exceptional learning opportunities designed to enrich our students’ experiences and build the foundation for lifelong learning. Kicking off the week with our core value of Wonder at our Lower School assembly, our fifth graders wowed us with a performance of the classic song, Thriller! The dance and enthusiasm were infectious, and witnessing students express themselves creatively was a joy. We are excited for Middle School students to see our 5th graders perform their routine next week following our Halloween Parade March! Mahalo to Coach T for teaching our students and upholding this fun annual tradition!
Spirit Week is off to a fantastic start! Students exhibited their creative side on Crazy Hair Day and got cozy for Pajama Day, a perennial favorite. Their enthusiasm and creativity made each day a celebration of our school spirit. Looking forward to even more as we dive into our remaining Spirit Week days, Monday, October 28, through Wednesday, October 30, concluding with our Halloween celebration on Wednesday afternoon. Mahalo again to our wonderful ʻOhana Association for their support of our afternoon festivities. For your convenience, here is the sign up sheet to volunteer for the Village Campus parade and set-up!
Lower School Parent-teacher Conferences
We look forward to connecting with all our families in person next week during our Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, October 31, and Friday, November 1. As a reminder, there are no classes for grades K – 8, as teachers will be meeting with parents during these days. If you have not already signed up or if you have any trouble signing up, please reach out to K-8 Administrative Assistant, Lynn Kakugawa, to get you scheduled. Be sure to also sign up to meet with your child’s Specialist teachers, in addition to your Grade-level conference.
We will provide complimentary childcare for K-8 students during their family’s scheduled teacher-parent conference time. Please drop your child(ren) off at least five minutes before your scheduled teacher-parent conference, and pick them up no later than 10 minutes after your conference has ended.
Finally, for those of you who were not able to attend our 3rd to 5th-grade musical, If You Come to Earth!, or maybe you just want to share or relive the magic, here is a recording of their wonderful performance.
Thank you for a week full of wonder, learning, and community spirit!
Mahalo,

Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Michael Cservenak pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Michael Cservenak
Aloha Middle School families,
Due to there being a pre-arranged field trip on Tuesday, our faculty decided to swap our Monday and Tuesday Spirit Day themes for this coming week to make sure as many students as possible can participate in our Advisory Match Day. The schedule below is the official schedule and the changed days are highlighted:

Next week, only Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are instructional days and Thursday and Friday are reserved for Parent-teacher Conferences. Please see this communication from our Village Campus office to reserve your slots if you have not done so already.
Our ʻOhana Association has been doing a wonderful job decorating our campus to give the feel of the fall holidays. We appreciate your support for both the decorating process and the take-down and clean up portion of these efforts to make our campus a festive place to learn. Please sign up to loan out Halloween decorations and to volunteer for decorating on Tuesday, October 29th here.
This past week, one of our 8th-grade science blocks went on their huakaʻi as part of their work to gain field science experience and apply concepts they’ve learned in the classroom. Hosted by The Kohala Center, the three 8th-grade blocks are visiting sites on the slopes of Kohala Mountain to assess the health of the watershed. Students learned about conservation work currently being done to restore native forests which gather water that sustains all types of communities on its slopes, including Waimea. They conducted plant surveys and gathered soil samples to investigate back in the classroom lab. Students will use this data in their quest to ideate ways to bring sufficient amounts of water back to the leeward slopes of Kohala.
Also, this past week, I had the delight of supporting a Drama field trip for our 7th and 8th-grade elective students to see “There’s Nothing Micro About Micronesia” at the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center. This piece of devised theater gave meaningful context to the deep narratives our Micronesian population carry with them when they emigrate to Hawaiʻi. And to cap things off, our 6th graders went on an experiential walking trip to the Kahilu Theater where they had the opportunity to get hands on with the backstage and lighting array in addition to being immersed in the very unique history that space has in our Waimea Community.
At this time, I’d also like to highlight the exceptional academic engagement that has been going on concurrently with all of the place-based, experiential learning. 7th-grade Social Studies students took on roles in a historical trial scenario that pushed students to take on different perspectives and make hard decisions. Our English teachers have also continued their novel studies with students during which they practice the academic and analytical skills that will be so essential in the coming years. I canʻt compliment our academic team enough on their commitment to engaging our students in high quality work that develops the core skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity.
I’m looking forward to meeting many of you during our parent teacher conference window. This is a wonderful time to be learning and growing at HPA Middle School!
Me ka mahalo nui,

Michael Cservenak
Middle School Principal

Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
