Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong
Aloha Lower School families!
The chill in the air, the cozy sweatshirts, the misty rainbows – it is Makahiki season! Always a special time at the Lower School, our community looks forward to our Makahiki games, community gatherings, opportunities to give, and of course our Thanksgiving holiday break. With students deep in their academic work, our learning is often connected to the changing seasons (pumpkin and moon studies, for example). Thank you for prioritizing these learning days and saving vacations and trips for when school is not in session.
Our week began with a beautifully full Assembly, focused on the Core Value of Integrity. What does it mean to have integrity? What does it mean to have moral courage? Our students explored and answered these questions with wisdom and curiosity, then took a few mindful moments to visualize themselves strengthening and honing their ability to do what is right, even when no one is looking.
This week’s Student Spotlight performers worked hard the last few weeks to prepare their assembly pieces for us (congratulations to 3rd graders Pihana and Lana, and 2nd graders, Genevieve, and Camilla!!). 1st-grade students talked about their beautiful study, Ke Ala o ka Mahina (and performed an inspiring chant), and a major highlight was our library election results! With huge thanks to Mrs. Tarnas, our K-8 Librarian, student representatives shared the many weeks of learning that took place in our Lynn Taylor Library, where students practiced civil discourse, discussed the qualities of a great leader, and voted for their favorite literary characters to be class president. With great ceremony and enthusiasm, we shared the following winners!
Closing out our Assembly were announcements by Mrs. Hustace, and Mrs. Prutow-McKenna, who reminded everyone about our Art, Garden, and Music learning collaboration and fundraising event, our now annual, Pinch Pot Harvest Fȇte.

Thank you to the many families who have already donated to our Student Council initiated endeavor, the Lahaina Librairies Coin Campaign. Every penny counts and we thank you in advance for your generosity!
Looking ahead to this Saturday, we want to wish our Village Campus Robotics Team all the best as they participate in the Robotics Qualifying Tournament at Kealakehe High School. Go Ka Makani!!
Me ke aloha pumehana,

Dora Kwong
Lower School Principal

Middle School
Each week, Middle School Principal Michael Cservenak pens a note to 6-8 families reflecting on the activities and accomplishments of the week and previewing what students and parents can look forward to in the coming days.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Michael Cservenak
Aloha Middle School families,
This past week has been a vibrant showcase of student talent and hands-on learning! Our 2D Art students had the honor of seeing their artwork on display at the Hawaiʻi Nei Art Exhibition in Hilo, an exciting opportunity to share their creativity with the larger community. Meanwhile, our Handbell students participated in their yearly retreat at the Upper Campus Davies Memorial Chapel, immersing themselves in music and fellowship. Our 6th-grade Experiential Learning program took learning on the road with a spirited game of Spikeball at Hāpuna Beach as part of hands-on PE. With our upcoming Makahiki Games and academic deadlines, HPA Middle School is keeping our students fully engaged in the dynamic world of learning and exploration.
I’m also proud to announce the reboot of our Middle School Student Ambassador Program! Last week, students began their first training session, preparing to assist at our Admissions Open House on Wednesday, November 13, and to serve as tour guides for interested families throughout the school year. This real-world experience will help them develop skills for potential ambassador roles at the Upper Campus in the future.
During our Middle School Assembly today, our students enjoyed a viewing of the student-produced Hiki NŌ documentary featuring our K-8 Capstone Coordinator, Mr. Dagan Bernstein. You can view the video here (Mr. Bernstein is featured about 20 minutes in) The screening was followed by a special, live musical performance from Mr. Bernstein himself—a true highlight. I am reminded daily that HPA Middle School is blessed with extraordinary talent in both our faculty and students alike!
I wish you a restful weekend and hope you enjoy the beauty of our incredible community.
Me ka mahalo nui,

Michael Cservenak
Middle School Principal

Please remember that we will be outside as much as possible during lunch and recess, so a rain jacket for light rains and a pareo or small beach towel for picnicking will be great to have at school. Students should also bring a water bottle to school each day.

Upper School
Each week, our Upper School leadership team provides valuable insight into campus culture while sharing updates with 9-12 day and Residential Life students and parents on everything taking place, from academics to athletics and the arts.
From the desk of your Upper School leadership team
Aloha Upper School families,
Last week’s Spirit Week brought such energy and joy to our campus, and it was a delight to see students and educators alike fully immersed in the fun of dressing up and showing their school spirit. This weekend promises even more excitement as many of our talented students bring the story of Shrek (see below for more details) to life on stage—a show that’s sure to be a fantastic experience for all involved!
This week, teachers have worked on advisory reports, which will be shared with families next Wednesday along with course updates on myHPA. These reports provide valuable insights into each student’s growth, helping us reflect on their unique journeys as we approach the end of the semester.
With just four weeks before finals, our students are focusing on their studies and making intentional choices about their academic journey. This brings to mind a quote that has guided me throughout my career: “Have a good day, or not, the choice is yours.” This simple yet profound message reminds us of the power we have to choose our responses to life’s events, big and small.
Our students face choices every day that build the foundation for their future success. When the path is clear—whether by completing assignments, engaging in class discussions, or embracing learning—they are laying down bricks of confidence and understanding. Then there are times when the road ahead feels more challenging—when a lesson seems out of reach, a grade misses the mark, or the way forward is uncertain. It is precisely in these moments that students learn the values of perseverance, courage, and grit. They come to realize that each hardship is an opportunity to choose growth, seek help, and keep going, knowing they are building skills that will serve them long into the future.
Mahalo nui for supporting our students as they navigate these meaningful moments. I hope you find time to talk with your students about the choices they are making and the growth they are experiencing. As educators, we are grateful for each of these opportunities to develop grace and grit, helping to prepare our students to meet life’s challenges with curiosity and resilience.
Upcoming dates to remember:
- Thanksgiving Break: Wednesday, November 27 – Friday, November 29
- All-Class Review Day: Friday, December 6
Final Exam schedule:
- Monday, December 9 – A Block (8:30 – 10:30 am) and B Block (12:30 – 2:30 pm) finals
- Tuesday, December 10 – C Block (8:30 – 10:30 am) and D Block (12:30 – 2:30 pm) finals
- Wednesday, December 11 – E Block (8:30 – 10:30 am) and F Block (12:30 – 2:30 pm) finals
- Thursday, December 12 – G Block (8:30 – 10:30 am) and Make-Up Block (12:30 – 2:30 pm) finals
- Winter Break: Friday, December 13 – Monday, January 6
- Second Semester Begins: Tuesday, January 7, 2025
Mahalo again for your ongoing support and partnership as we guide our students through these last few weeks of the semester. The road ahead may be clear or challenging, but every choice strengthens our foundation of resilience—day by day, choice by choice.
With gratitude,

Amanda Aragon
Upper School Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator

Isaacs Art Center
Become a Docent at the Isaacs Art Center
As we continue to grow and expand our outreach, we are looking for passionate individuals to join our team of volunteer docents. We are particularly in need of docents on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you or someone you know has a love for art and education and would like to contribute to our mission, we would be thrilled to have you on board.
This is a unique opportunity to engage with the art and culture of Hawai‘i, connect with our community, and make a meaningful impact.
If you’re interested or know someone who might be, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We would love to discuss how you can be a part of this special endeavor.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to support the Isaacs Art Center and the Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy community.
Isaacs Art Center is free and open to the public, Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Gallery works for sale may also be viewed on our website. Be sure to also visit our Instagram and Facebook pages for highlights from ongoing exhibitions. Sales from gallery artwork have supported the HPA Financial Aid program since its opening in 2004.
Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message) and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
