School Bulletins for the Week of 11/15/24
Lower School
Each week, Lower School Principal Dora Kwong writes a message to K-5 families highlighting joyful moments and meaningful lessons and offering a glimpse into what students and parents can plan for in the weeks ahead.
From the desk of your Division Principal, Dora Kwong
Aloha Lower School families!
Mahalo to our inspiring and collaborative K-8 Garden Educator, Mrs. Lauren Prutow-McKenna, and K-5 Art Teacher, Ms. Alexa Hustace, for putting together what I know will be a tremendous community event, our 3rd Annual K-8 Pinch Pot Harvest Fȇte! At the time of this publishing, the Fête is just getting underway and I hope you are there to be a part of the magic of it all. With proceeds benefiting this year’s spotlight nonprofit organization, Nā Kālai Waʻa, your donation will help support their mission of perpetuating Hawaiian food traditions when growing and preparing waʻa (canoe) provisions.
Speaking of donations, a friendly reminder that our K-5 Student Council-led Lahaina Librairies Coin Campaign continues to be underway. This season of giving, let us support those devastated in Lahaina by giving generously to help rebuild our neighbor islandʻs libraries. Donations will continue to be collected through Monday, November 25. Every penny counts!
Lego Robotics Teams Shine in Districts Qualifying!
Since August, our four Lego Robotics Teams, composed of 4th to 8th graders, have been hard at work preparing for the Challenge competition. In this exciting event, teams design and build robots to complete various missions while tackling real-world engineering challenges. This year’s theme, “Submerged,” focused on issues faced beneath the ocean’s surface. Our teams all researched and met with subject matter experts from the community.
Our teams include:
- The HPA Flying Fish #53300 (6th-8th graders)
- The HPA Ka Makani Krakens #60110 (5th & 6th graders)
- The HPA Fluffy Scuba Sloths #61760 (4th graders)
- The HPA Hydro Hippos #61762 (4th & 5th graders)
Highlights of their projects include:
- The Flying Fish developed an ROV to filter microplastics, inspired by manta rays.
- The Fluffy Scuba Sloths created methods to cool sea turtle nests to balance gender populations.
- The Ka Makani Kraken designed an underwater ROV to gather data and support coral reef recovery.
- The Hydro Hippos proposed enhancements to whale tracking technology and designed a dolphin-like ROV for natural data collection.
This past weekend, our teams competed with teams from across Hawaiʻi Island in the Districts Qualifying event, showcasing their hard work and dedication. The Flying Fish won the Robot Design Award, and the Ka Makani Kraken earned the Project Innovation Award! All four teams performed exceptionally well, qualifying for the HFLL (Hawaii First Lego League) Challenge State Championship on December 15, 2024, at McKinley High School on Oʻahu.
Congratulations to all our teams for their outstanding achievements! We are so proud of our wonder-filled students! Additionally, thank you to Mrs. Mellon Monello, our K-8 Educational Technologist for her hard work and motivation to support our students in all things tech. Our Robotics Program is a success because of her dedication, patience, and deep passion for enriching our students.
Capstone Update from K-8 Capstone Coordinator, Dagan Bernstein ‘97
Last week marked the start of the Grade 5 Capstone journey, an exciting exploration of the student’s passions and interests. HPA’s Capstone program focuses on projects that align with our school’s Mālama Kaiāulu community sustainability plan, encouraging students to find ways to contribute to a sustainable and thriving community.
Over the coming weeks, our 5th-grade students will identify topics that connect with their personal interests and values and develop project ideas addressing real-life needs within our community. This will help them form their project proposals, setting the stage for meaningful, inquiry-driven learning. We’re excited to see how our students connect with their passions and look forward to sharing their progress as they engage in this important journey of learning!
HPA’s Portrait of a Graduate

We value your perspective on this work, and we invite you to share your insights by completing this brief PoG/CPE Survey. Mahalo for helping us enrich the HPA experience for all students.
As always, mahalo for choosing HPA to be the school for your keiki. It is a privilege to partner with you and be a part of this community together. Have a beautiful weekend, Lower School ʻohana!
Me ke aloha pumehana,

Dora Kwong

From the desk of your Division Principal, Michael Cservenak
Aloha Middle School families!
In our assemblies and in person, I have often highlighted a quote that I believe rings true: “Mood follows action.” With so much coming together in the final weeks of the first semester, it can be easy for our students to lose motivation or feel that they are ‘not in the mood’ to complete a revision or study for an assessment, but it is a simple action that will trigger the motivation and mood to do their best. Below, I have included reports from our Ed Tech Specialist, Ms. Monello, on the actions of our Robotics teams and from Mr. Bernstein, our Capstone Coordinator, on the actions and next steps for our 8th graders in their capstone journey (essential reading for our 8th-grade parents). Enjoy these updates and have a great weekend!

Capstone Update from K-8 Capstone Coordinator, Dagan Bernstein ‘97
This past month, our 8th-grade students completed their capstone proposals for approval by the 8th-grade capstone team. During this process they refined their proposals based on feedback from their peers, families, and capstone advisor. This process has helped them generate a detailed proposal that clearly outlines the community need they are addressing and their proposed solution.
To build strong foundations for their plans, students also participated in a collaborative exercise inspired by Tom Wujec’s “How to Make Toast” TED Talk, which emphasizes the power of clear, step-by-step thinking. Through this activity, they identified the core deliverables for their projects and began breaking down their ideas into a series of structured, manageable tasks.
Looking ahead, students will begin completing the tasks that make up their first deliverable. This phase will involve hands-on work, problem-solving, and critical thinking, allowing them to put their plans into action. We’re excited to see their growth and dedication as they move forward in this journey!
Important Process Reminders from the VC Front Office
- If a student is arriving tardy to campus (anytime after 8:00 am), they should call the Office or email.
- If a student is leaving campus early, they should call the Office or email prior to the pick-up time. We suggest first thing in the morning, or the day prior.
- If the pick-up person is someone other than the student’s parents, they must inform the Office or email to authorize.

Upper School
Each week, our Upper School leadership team provides valuable insight into campus culture while sharing updates with 9-12 day and Residential Life students and parents on everything taking place, from academics to athletics and the arts.
From the desk of your Upper School leadership team
Aloha Upper School families,
With just four weeks remaining until the end of the semester, now is the time to help our learners best prepare for final projects and exams. Thank you to Ms. Crystal Sebastian, our Freshman Health instructor, for sharing this information.
Many thanks to our teachers who have brought our students along throughout the semester to elevate their skills in their courses. The Upper School continues to raise awareness with students to know their strengths and challenges and how to solve problems and get along with others. Those four things are brought together best by Mawi Asgedom in his book, “The Success GPA.” It’s a concise read that keeps it simple to understand. Success for our students, no matter their grade, can surely be more successful by recognizing the four areas identified and working to improve.
The Senior Speaker Series 2024-25 will begin Monday, November 18, 2024, in Davies Memorial Chapel. Students will need to check in at 8:15 am with their advisor wearing aloha attire. Students will be seated at 8:30 am. We are excited to have the Class of 2025 Class Leaders, Ms. Julie Camarillo and Mr. Robert Burchell, reflect on the past four years and present their advisory group to share their experiences.
Finally, congratulations to our student-athletes and performers who recently ended their fall season. We are proud of all the performances in Shrek – The Musical, Girls Cross Country (BIIF & State Champions), Boys Cross Country (BIIF Champion and Third at HHSAA), and Football (BIIF Runner-Up). Best of luck to all students gearing up for their team or performance during the Winter season.

Isaacs Art Center
Become a Docent at the Isaacs Art Center
As we continue to grow and expand our outreach, we are looking for passionate individuals to join our team of volunteer docents. We are particularly in need of docents on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you or someone you know has a love for art and education and would like to contribute to our mission, we would be thrilled to have you on board.
This is a unique opportunity to engage with the art and culture of Hawai‘i, connect with our community, and make a meaningful impact.
If you’re interested or know someone who might be, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We would love to discuss how you can be a part of this special endeavor.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to support the Isaacs Art Center and the Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy community.
Isaacs Art Center is free and open to the public, Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Gallery works for sale may also be viewed on our website. Be sure to also visit our Instagram and Facebook pages for highlights from ongoing exhibitions. Sales from gallery artwork have supported the HPA Financial Aid program since its opening in 2004.
Safety Protocols
Campus Access
During this time, campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests — all of whom have completed a daily thermal/symptom check and a screening questionnaire. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
Should a family member of a student need a meeting with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, kindly contact them so that they can apply to have you come to campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately and email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Mark Noetzel at mnoetzel@hpa.edu

You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SPeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
myHPA Resource Boards
Past HPA communications and other important information can be found on myHPA. We are continuing to make updates to our student and parent resource boards, so please be sure to visit them regularly.
