Aloha Lower School ʻOhana!
It has been a beautiful week of school, despite the unpredictable wind and rain! Thank you to all families who have donated to our Student Council-led Thanksgiving Food Drive! We will continue to receive donations through this coming Monday, November 24th.
Upcoming Dates and Notes
Lower School Holiday Chapel, Wednesday, December 10 | 5:30-6:30 pm
We are delighted to invite you to our annual Lower School Holiday Chapel. This gathering brings our community together in celebration, offering our students and families a moment to pause, give thanks, and connect with the spirit of the season as we close our first semester. Our featured performers will be our 4th and 5th grade handchimes and handbells choirs, alongside some special guest speakers and musicians. Students will be seated by grade with their class. Please drop them off with their teachers upon arrival and you can be seated in the audience. Aim to arrive by 5:15pm as the event begins at 5:30pm. Don your favorite festive aloha wear!

Lonoikamakahiki!
The Season of Lono is here! During the second quarter, students learned about and participated in the season of Makahiki. They are learning the spiritual importance of the Makahiki season as well as the Hawaiian games associated with the time period. During this time we emphasize the importance and practice of mahalo (gratitude) and kūpono (excellence). Students are learning games such as: Ulu maika (Hawaiian Bowling), Uma (Arm Wrestling), Kūkini (Running), Hakamoa (Chicken Fight), and Hukihuki (tug of war) and more. These skills range from physical strength to accuracy, balance, and strategy. It is their favorite time of the year in Hawaiian Studies and I enjoy teaching, playing, and witnessing their growth over the years.
This Monday (November 24), our 8th-grade students will host our Lower School Makahiki Games and honor Lā Kū’okoʻa, our Independence Day of Hawai’i. Please have your child rested, hydrated, and ready for a day of games, joy, and healthy competition.
Reminders:
• Wear their red HPA PE shirt or a red Shirt (See Aunty Dot if you do not have one).
• Bring Water Bottle
• Wear Running Shoes
• Wear and Bring Sunscreen
We look forward to a great day honoring our traditions of Hawai’i.
Aloha,
Kumu Kūwalu

Pilina: Weekly Highlights Connecting Us on Campus
Bringing together highlights, stories, and connections from across our Middle School community this week.
Aloha Middle School Families,
Lono I Ka Makahiki! Mahalo for your continued partnership as we move into this season of gratitude and community. In Hawaiʻi, the season of Lono is a time of renewal and reflection, and our school community celebrates it through the Makahiki Games — a cornerstone of our commitment to learning rooted in Hawaiian tradition. These games invite our students to practice leadership, respect, and teamwork while deepening their sense of place. To learn more about some of the fundamental tenets of Makahiki season, you can read this post from Kaʻiwakīoummoku (Pacific Indigenous Institute).
We are also grateful for your generous contributions to our Advisory Makahiki Baskets, which help support families in need during the holiday season. Please check your child’s advisory emails for any final details of the exact food items needed to create a full basket contribution.
After our return, we will be in the full swing of the closing of the 1st Semester and the Holiday Season. HPA, lead by our ʻOhana Association, will have a float in the Waimea Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 6. To support or march in the parade, please refer to this communication from our ʻOhana Association.

As they have been throughout the year, faculty are available to provide extra student support in their classroom on Mamo days, beginning at 1:35 pm. As we approach the end of the semester, please encourage your student(s) to check in with their faculty with any questions they may have about their class.
The remaining Mamo dates are as follows: Monday, November 24, Monday, December 1, Wednesday, December 3, and Friday, December 5. Monday, December 8, offers all class periods throughout the day for exam review. The exam schedule is listed below.
Peer Tutoring
With semester exams rapidly approaching, Mr. Williams, our learning center specialist, has a great opportunity for students to learn material from a peer. Often, having a peer present information reveals a new way to approach solving problems in math, science, or a better way to write a paper. The students who are tutoring have gone through the courses that other students may need help with and can provide their perspective. I encourage all students to check it out.
Location: All sessions will be held in the Learning Center (Technology Building).

PSAT Scores are In: Next Steps
The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9 scores are now available. Please keep in mind that these scores are not a judgment of a student’s abilities, but rather a diagnostic tool to help identify strengths and areas for growth so students can create a personalized testing plan moving forward.
Students may access their scores in one of the following ways:
- Stop by the library to pick up a printed copy of their score report.
- If a student already has a College Board account, they can access their scores by logging in here.
- If a student does not have a College Board account, they can access their scores by creating one using the legal name exactly as listed on their score report.
Please reference the workbooks below to gain a better understanding of your student’s scores:

Follow Our Kauaʻi Outdoor Program Adventure
We’re excited to share the blog for this year’s Outdoor Program trip to Kauaʻi! Each evening, after returning to camp from a full day of exploration, a small group of students will write a post recapping the day’s highlights and adding photos from their adventures.
Because this trip is intentionally phone-free, students can stay fully present and build deeper connections without digital distractions. The blog offers families a meaningful way to follow along, enjoy photo updates, and feel connected throughout the journey. Over the past two years, it has also become a valuable space for students to reflect on their experiences.

Safety Protocols
Campus Access
Campus access is limited to current students, employees, essential contractors, and approved guests. Guests to campus will have had their hosting faculty or staff member fill out the appropriate form and will have received permission from their supervisor.
If a family member of a student needs to meet with a faculty, staff, or administrative team member, please contact them to arrange a meeting on campus. From that point, security team members will be alerted to your appointment date and time and let you onto campus.
At the Upper School, please do not park and walk onto campus without an appointment. Similarly, at the Village Campus, kindly call or email for an appointment so that arrangements can be made. Mahalo, for your understanding and respect for this process.
If you See Something, Say Something
We ask all families to join HPA in keeping our campus safe. While on the HPA campus, if you see anything out of the ordinary, we ask that you please report it to the school or local authorities immediately. This will help us maintain the safest campus for our students.
- Imminent threat to life or property: call 911 immediately. Follow up with your supervisor ASAP.
- Anything out of the ordinary: email Dan Wilkinson, HPA Security Supervisor at dwilkinson@hpa.edu
CrisisGo for Parents
It is important that all families are set up with CrisisGo, HPA’s school emergency communication tool. To set up CrisisGo SMS/Email subscription, please click on this invitation link and complete the form by adding your name, email, and cell number (this is an important step if you would like to receive an SMS message), and click on the Subscribe button. Should an emergency occur, you will be alerted by email and SMS messaging. You can also locate these instructions by logging into myHPA, clicking on the resource tab, and selecting the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile.
Safe2SpeakUp for Middle and Upper Students
Similarly, Middle and Upper School students received instructions during orientation on how to upload the Safe2SpeakUp app. This is a companion app to CrisisGo. It will allow the school to alert students of emergencies that happen on or off campus and enable students to communicate with us about their safety status. They can also use the app to alert the school about any behaviors they are concerned about. Students can also locate instructions on setting up Safe2SpeakUp in myHPA, and they were also emailed the video shown at orientation which walks them through the process of uploading the app and registering, step-by-step.
All students can also submit an Online Bully/Harassment report by clicking on this link, which can also be located on the CrisisGo Safe2SpeakUp tile on myHPA.
